You can visit "Paper Medium," an Exhibition by Roma Devanbu at Axis Gallery until January 1st. The gallery is open Saturday and Sunday from noon-5pm, no appointment needed, masks and social distancing required. More about the show: The meaningful and complex relationships that we have with the objects which fill our homes has been a recurring theme in Roma Devanbu’s work for many years. Months of following strict shelter-at-home protocols have further focused Devanbu’s... attention on the domestic devices that serve as mediums of vital connection to the people, places and things beyond the constraints of our physical locations. This new body of work includes numerous interpretations of the tech-magic video meetings that have come to dominate our days. Other works feature objects such as heirlooms and meteorites which link us to places of origin both personal and universal. Several pieces reference the hand tatted doilies of Devanbu’s great grandmothers, Mither and Big Jo. Big Jo, was understood to be a trance medium, with the ability to communicate with souls in other realms. She was the inspiration for the interactive piece Electronic Medium. Manuel Fernando Rios "Accompanied Isolation" Aerosol and Silkscreen on Paper 18 x 12 inches 2020... This print is part of our new limited edition AXIS 2020: Artists in Isolation portfolios available for purchase for $2000 each through our website at: https://axiseditions.com/pro/axis-gallery-portfolio-edition Artists in Isolation portfolio contains 14 works of art, each created in a signed edition of 6 by each of the participating Axis member artists: Omar Thor Arason, Tavarus Blackmon, Doug Dertinger, Roma Devanbu, Kenna Doeringer, Richard Gilles, Benjamin Hunt, Muzi Li, William Mead, Vincent Pacheco, Manuel Fernando Rios, Nicholas Shepard, Joanne Tepper Saffren, and Summer Ventis. About the work: Like many people in early 2020, my world was flipped upside down once Covid-19 made its way around the globe. I was forced to live in a world that I was not used to. A simple trip to the store now became a race to get my items and back to my car within a few minutes. I no longer had the freedom to see my aging parents, hug my brothers and sisters or their kids. But as quick as I was introduced to this new world, a video conferencing technology called Zoom would be my gateway to human interaction. I was now teaching art classes using Zoom, I was seeing friends and family using Zoom and I was having meetings using Zoom. Zoom here, zoom there, Zoom everywhere. It was great for a time. But as days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months, I found myself living in a world where I am physically alone but virtually accompanied.

Axis Gallery is happy to announce the Juror's Choice Awards for our 15th National Juried Competition. Juror Marcela Pardo Ariza has chosen the work of Hasler Gomez, Elise Weber, and Robert Núñez (artwork pictured) to each receive the distinction and an award of $200 for the work they have exhibited in the Competition. You can still see Robert's work by going to our website to make an appointment to visit the gallery tomorrow 12-5pm About the artist:... "I was born and raised in Carson City, Nevada by Mexican immigrant parents. I am currently a student at the University of Nevada, Reno studying Atmospheric Science and Photography. I’m driven by a compulsion to capture the forgotten and overlooked moments that make up everyday life. This compulsion can be best described as an urge, an urge that I have felt since I was about 13 or 14 years old. It’s the moments that seem unremarkable that I’m most drawn to. The images I create allow me a moment to pause and concentrate, within the constant shifting state of my mind. I’m not interested in finding something profound in the mundane; my images are not meant to be anything more than what they are. My aim is to give my viewer the opportunity to consider the aesthetic value in the every day and to invite them to consider their surroundings from a different perspective." https://robertnoonez.com/

Joanne Tepper Saffren "blue for you" cyanotype chemicals, sunshine, 100% cotton paper Edition of 6 Dimension: 16 x 12... 2020 This print is part of our new limited edition AXIS 2020: Artists in Isolation portfolios available for purchase for $2000 each through our website at: https://axiseditions.com/pro/axis-gallery-portfolio-edition Artists in Isolation portfolio contains 14 works of art, each created in a signed edition of 6 by each of the participating Axis member artists: Omar Thor Arason, Tavarus Blackmon, Doug Dertinger, Roma Devanbu, Kenna Doeringer, Richard Gilles, Benjamin Hunt, Muzi Li, William Mead, Vincent Pacheco, Manuel Fernando Rios, Nicholas Shepard, Joanne Tepper Saffren, and Summer Ventis. About the work: I began this year making work from the clothes belonging to my husband’s side of our closet. Robert died in November of 2018. With our grown children out of the house, I was still learning to live on my own. When he was alive, Robert was my extra set of hands helping make my work. Creating with his clothes kept us working together. As an artist I have always coveted my alone time. When the pandemic took over our world, I felt embarrassingly grateful for the quarantined isolation and the excuse to be totally focused on my art practice. In March I left Robert’s memory-infused clothes hanging where they had been for three decades and I began making ephemeral work like I thought the virus would be. Then, in July, I was diagnosed with a slow-growing form of cancer. I spent three surreal nights in a Bay Area hospital. My community expanded as I felt a solidarity with the other patients. Our health issues, hospital stay, and road to recovery united us as we suffered through an uncanny escalation of sickness, prejudice, and hatred in a world needing tenderness and urgent care. I have never felt so isolated and alone. I feel grateful for the freedom to visually express and share my worry-filled longing that is bonding many of us together in empathy and in hope for a safe tomorrow. While I enjoy occasional outdoor visits with my children and grandchildren there is still a barrier of isolation. We wear masks, keep our distance and long for hugs. Blue for You shows the critical nature of experimentation, materiality and process in my art practice. In this work, the blue color is from the light of day. I made small India ink paintings on transparent film. These paintings were arranged, without touching, in a zoom like format on paper painted with cyanotype chemicals and exposed with daylight. The black ink blocked the suns’ rays like an X-ray reversing it to white and bathing them in blue. A way to connect from afar.
