Habit development is a lifelong process. It can be a positive habit like getting regular exercise or a negative one like staring at your phone during mealtime. So why is the latter such a problem? If you want to get the most out of your food in terms of fueling your workouts, you want to be in a more parasympathetic nervous system dominant state, which means rest and digest. If I'm looking at a screen (particularly stressful news or social media) it can up-regulate the sympathetic nervous systsem (fight or flight) and actually interfere with my digestion and nutrient absorption, which in turn impedes recovery and diminishes training performance.
This is a blog post on a new fitness tracker I've been using called the Whoop Band. Most fitness trackers don't actually do very much aside from count your steps and maybe read your heart rate. The few that capture HRV (in my opinion) don't actually do that much with the information aside from spit a vague number back at you. The Whoop Band takes information from your heart rate, HRV and sleep cycles and distills it down into usable data that can change the way you train.
