Today is the day! These are Zinderella Lilac Zinnias and I had been counting down the days until they were ready to plant! We have traditionally grown only edible plants and edible flowers, with a few exceptions to help out our good friends the bees & butterflies. Last summer we planted Zinderella Peach Zinnias and I was hooked. I knew that this summer we would have to dedicate a good portion of the Avalow test garden to cutting flowers to see how they would get along with ou...r traditional summer veggies (basil, tomato, etc). We've planted Zinderella Peach, Purple, Lilac, Candy Mix and Cupcake Pink to name a few. I look forward to sharing their vibrance with you as well as our findings! If you are interested in joining our Zinderella journey by growing some of your own Zinderella's, we have a cutting flower plant package available for purchase (plants not seeds!). It would be fun to grow with you to see how our flowers differ based on location! See more

Beets for days! It's that time of year when seeds that struggled to germinate in the winter are now adult plants begging to be harvested. Washing beets is not nearly as funny as this photo makes it out to be, (I'm not a fan of having pink hands). Jeremy was off-camera dancing, which is kind of hilarious. We'll be using the beets in a handful of recipes over the next few days and I am so excited! Pink food for days! Beet hummus, beet pickled deviled eggs, and roasted beets with tarragon to name a few. Recipes are available on the Avalow app, so check them out! PS. Don't forget to eat the beet greens! The greens are rich in iron, Vitamin C, and Vitamin A.

You should grow this plant. This is red veined sorrel and it is the plant-friend that won't let you down. The only place you can garden is mainly shady? No problem, sorrel is there for you. Oh no! Your garden gets a bit toasty? Sorrel is there to provide a little shade to a neighboring plant. There are two planter boxes framing the entrance to Avalow, and the lighting is terrible. The boxes are mainly shaded out by the building except for one corner that bakes. We have experimented with many plants over the past few years and the most faithful has been this red veined sorrel. Silverlining, it is a perennial! It is great in a sauté or soup and equally tasty in a salad. It is now available for a limited time as a start in our farmer's market plant package!

Indoor gardening! It has been raining the past few days, which has given me a great opportunity to focus on our newest planter - the Burbank. You are catching me during a tomato pruning session. The planter is lightweight (fabric) and is self-watering, which is great for indoors as it stays dry and doesn't need top watering. Indoor gardening just means I need to make sure the plant does not grow too large and bushy. This planter is growing a Gilbertie paste tomato, so hello pasta sauce and salsa! #gardenmorestressless #growavalow #indoorgarden #garden #burbanktote #indoorplants

We are very excited to announce a partnership with School Garden Network (SGN). SGN is a local non-profit who aims to support school gardens throughout Sonoma County. They believe that school gardens are a critical part of an educational setting so that children can learn about nature, agriculture and food systems, nutrition, and resilience in a safe and hands-on environment. Now, more than ever, they advocate that these schoolyard green spaces are critical to the educational, social, emotional, and physical well-being of our youth and communities. School Garden Network needs your help! Please make a donation if you can. https://www.schoolgardens.org/donate.html

Jeremy and I enjoyed a mini road trip with our pup Stella to hand-deliver this herb package to a lovely Mom in Santa Cruz, CA for Mother's Day! Okay, so we just placed it on the porch and sent a text message from a safe social-distance away, but I think it counts. I absolutely adore the coast with all of the wildflowers and succulents growing everywhere. Stella didn't seem too impressed with the greenery, but she did love sniffing the ocean air. #growmorestressless #growavalow #herb #santacruz

With the temperature swings from hot to cold to hot again, our little celery threw in the white flag today and bolted. My initial reaction was disappointment (I strongly dislike going to the store for celery), but then I remembered... I could still enjoy the celery flavor with the leaves on top! That's right, celery leaves are delicious. Try them in pesto or soup and you won't be disappointed. #growmorestressless

Go ahead and clear a shelf in your pantry for the adorable extracts you are going to be making. This recipe has two ingredients and one of them can be the mint you've been trying to keep up with! Check out the recipe on our Avalow app to get started!
