Whilst schools in the UK strive towards creating an inclusive education, many children still feel like a square peg trying to fit into a round hole. Unfortunately, with so much emphasis on results, it seems increasingly challenging for teachers to meet children’s holistic needs and support their overall health and wellbeing. "I have a request for all parents reading this Teach your child to be kind to others especially those with special needs. Those with special needs are twice as likely to be bullied compared to their non-disabled peers . Growing up with autism I would befriend bullies because even though I was receiving negative attention it was some form of attention. I also had a challenge understanding sarcasm. It made me an easy target and, even though I wouldn’t understand it at the time..., was something I truly didn’t need. I needed genuine friends who had similar key interests. Maybe if I had less people who would do these things to me I would have had more opportunities to form those friendships. I was inspired to write this after reading an autism mom’s post about a situation that happened to her autistic son at the park where he was treated cruelly by his peers. It reminds me that this is not an isolated incident but something that happens far too often in our community. It doesn’t stop with autism though. So many individuals I’ve interviewed for my self-advocate video series have mentioned the harms of some key interactions. I know of individuals with Down Syndrome who have been mocked in the past for how they look. I know those with Social Communication Disorder who have been bullied for them keeping to themselves and being the ‘quiet kid.’ I know those with Cerebral Palsy who’ve been made fun of for how they walk. I could go on and on. Pledge to practice empathy, celebrate differences and educate others to do the same. Thank you. Odin Frost is non-verbal autistic, and his best friend, Jordon Granberry, had brain damage due to complications at birth that led to a lack of oxygen in the brain, Odin's dad, Tim Frost, said. - The two best friends, who both have special needs, grew up side-by-side in Tyler, Texas. Some doctors thought they wouldn't live past 7-years-old, but the dynamic duo prove...d them all wrong. And on June 16th, Odin and Jordon both graduated in what Frost called a "surreal" moment, holding his son's hand across the stage and trying to hold back his tears. - "We almost didn't go," Frost said. "We wanted to keep him safe, same with Jordon's parents. But something in us said, 'We can't let Odin miss out on graduation.' I never graduated high school or even went to high school, so I didn't want him to be robbed of this privilege." - Now, Odin and Jordon are officially high school graduates, and they did it together! - After the epic graduation day, the families had a small celebration and the parents popped a bottle of champagne to celebrate their sons' achievements, Frost said. - The Wayne D.
