Kern River Preserve parking lot 2019 and 1992. Thank you Sue for sending some memorable photographs.
Every visit to the Prairie falcon Sites is now showing year round activity. Found an immature falcon out there one time lately. And this weekend Cadillac had bo...th male and female on the butte. Can you find them in the first picture? They sit like rocks until someone starts shooting or riding up their butte. Good to see the better rebound of the falcon's resilience. See more
Conservation Biology at Audubon’s Allen Sanctuary Dr. Greg Grether from the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California Los Angeles is conducting a state-wide survey of a very common species, the American rubyspot damselfly (Hetaerina americana). This survey is a California Conservation Genomics project which includes many experts who are gathering genetic information from many species across the state. This information will be used to make science based decisions to help conserve our natural diversity in the face of habitat loss and climate change. We at Audubon are very pleased that specimens collected by Dr. Grether from our Allen Sanctuary will help this research.
Audubon Chapters in Kern County played an important role in helping with this great conservation project. Kern, Kerncrest and Antelope Valley Chapters supported a request for grant funds from Audubon California's Wimberley Land Protection Fund. This was one of the first financial commitments to the project. Our partners at Trust for Public Lands and the Kern River Valley Heritage Foundation went on to secure multiple grants and raised all of the funds needed for this conservation victory.
Kern River Preserve will continue to remain closed to the public due to safety concerns regarding Covid 19. Thank you for your patience.
What a great project for students to do at home!
The students at Kern Valley High School are taking native plants home to care for them until the Kern River Valley Heritage Foundation is prepared for planting next fall or spring. These nolina, yucca and Joshua tree will go into the more arid locations that were once dryland farmed on the Hot Springs Valley Wetland Preserve.
