Today, we are remembering Torian Dajour Hughes, who was fatally shot eighteen months ago, on December 20, 2015, around 1:40 in the afternoon. Torian was only 1...7 years old when he was murdered in West Oakland. He would have graduated high school this year, but instead, his young life was taken from his family and friends, who loved Torian tremendously. He was a kind thoughtful young man who loved helping others. The Mayor of the City of Alameda, Trish Herrera-Spencer, even proclaimed January 11, 2016 as "Torian Hughes Day", in his memory. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Torian's mom, Audrey CandyCorn, stays busy keeping Torian's name alive, while also promoting her two family businesses that were started before Torian was killed. Torian, along with his two younger brothers, Amir and Ziair started the two family businesses, T.A.Z. Foundation Anti-Bullying Gear and Ishy-Me Stranger Danger Anti-Bullying Campaign. The Ishy-Me Stranger Danger Anti-Bullying Campaign was written, illustrated and produced by her sons. Team work makes the dream work! Systemic Change! We came together as Community and City Council and said YES to the establishment of Oakland's first Department... of Violence Prevention! Special thank you to the amazing community Leaders of whom took a stand with me to say our community matters! The Johnson Brothers Ceasar Melvin Johnson, Julius Johnson, Barbara Howard, Desmond Iman Arnold Perkins, Cephus X Johnson, Kumi Rauf, Tichelle Rose, @JustinLee, and many many others. Thank you to everyone that watched our video, shared it, liked it, reached out to council members, stood in front of city hall, and took the mic to share your stories. Thank you to everyone that stood with us when we were told to stand down. Your love and support strengthened our efforts. Seriously! Thank you to the leadership of the DVP propsal authors Council Member Lynette Gibson McElhaney, Reid and Sponsor Kaplan. Shout-Outs to Dan Kalb, Annie Campbell Washington and Abel Guillén for hearing and standing up for the people by voting Yes! You are awesome! It's been an honor to serve alongside Lynette and everyone as we've worked together to serve Oakland's most vulnerable. Lynette's courage and leadership has been truly inspirational throughout this democratic process. We as a people can make a difference when we stand together. When we are fighting for what we believe, we must be willing to put it all on the line. She did that and encouraged me to boldly stand as well. We still have much to do as this is only the beginning. It's going to takes all of us (Oakland) working together to make this a strong to department. We can now do some serious work to address homicide cold cases, the commercial rape kidnapping and sexual exploitation of our kids as well as address domestic violence head on. We now have a resource to help elevate the amazing violence prevention work that's currently happening. By coordinating our efforts, we can become a much stronger unified force in making Oakland a safe city for all. But as I said, it's only the beginning. It's going to take all of us. We need you!
