Opera composers have chosen some unusual story topics over the centuries, but Christmas seems pretty normal. Until you think about some of them: an elf befriends an old bah-humbug fir tree; the story of Paul Bunyan ends with a gluttonous Christmas feast of meat and pie (and a Western Union messenger with a telegram calling a character to come to Hollywood), and so on.
