The field of landscape architecture, founded in patriarchy, white supremacy and colonization, must change. It is essential for the profession to identify, challenge, and reform the values, structures and behaviors that perpetuate systemic racism and sexism. Atlas Lab Principal, Kimberly Garza, together with Diana Fernandez PLA, ASLA Andrew Sargeant, Jose Leal and Kona Gray, deliver a powerful keynote on Wednesday, November 18, 2020, to share a collective acknowledgement of racism in the profession and examine what it is like to navigate the profession as people of color, culminating in a unified expression of hope for change and growth in the profession. Please join #reVISIONASLA2020 to gain insight on how to build a new value system. bit.ly/reVISIONsched

PLACEMAKING IS A PROCESS Ah-Lo’-Mah’, basket in the Miwuk language, is a temporary, placemaking installation located in Mariposa, California. @atlaslab was awarded the Mariposa County Creative Placemaking Master Plan in 2019 by the County of Mariposa and the Mariposa Arts Council, through a National Endowment for the Arts grant. ... For this master plan effort, we employed tactical strategies to embrace the community during the process. Working closely with the Mariposa Placemaking Strategy Advisory Committee, made up of residents, business owners, and community activists, the committee selected a concept that celebrated the Miwuk practice of basket making. This, in turn, established a collaborative relationship with the Southern Sierra Miwuk Nation, who was involved in the design and execution for the duration of the placemaking installation. The intent of the installation is to engage the public, garner feedback through an online survey and showcase an example of placemaking to the community. But the impacts of Ah-Lo’-Mah’ go far beyond that. The basket making process engaged native women who had never weaved before, learning from experienced tribal members, to create their first baskets that adorn the installation. Moreover, the installation recently secured additional grant funding to expand the project along the Mariposa Creek Parkway. The project is a display of the positive affect that small scale placemaking installations, done with a limited budget but ample collaboration, can have on a community. WE’VE MOVED! We are psyched to call the @theiceblocks our new home away from home! During the pandemic, we’ve had to reset how and where we work. We have joined the ‘Spaces’ community to provide us the flexibility to meet as a team, host small and large meetings (when the time comes), brainstorm in the various breakout rooms, all the while taking advantage of all the amazing amenities on R Street and Midtown. This stunning building is one of the first contemporary, timber-framed mid-rise structures in NorCal. Crazy to think we created the PORTAL installation 5 years ago on this same block and now we are calling it home! #atlaslab #newchapter

Groundbreaking at The Mansion! Vertical construction has begun to transform the former Mansion Inn/Clarion Inn site into a 186 unit mixed-use development. Atlas is developing the landscape architecture for the project, including interior courtyards, residential patios and alley sculpture walk. The proposed landscape echoes the mid century character of the former Mansion Inn and blends the interior and exterior spaces. The Mansion is developed by SKK Developments and designed by C2K Architecture. #atlaslab @ Midtown

Support Sacramento Black Artists www.BlackArtistsFund.org The Black Artists Fund was started by Sacramento Black creatives to address inequity in arts funding. Through micro and small grant-giving we are attempting to close the gap that Black artists face in beginning and sustaining their art careers. With funding, artists are able to expound on their creative practice with new ideas, larger-scale works, innovative experimentation, community... projects, and overall an increased capacity to produce culturally relevant work. Donations are collected from generous patrons, organizations, philanthropists, collectors, and everyday people that understand the value in establishing and sustaining an environment for Black creative production. Fine, applied, and creative artists using all mediums are encouraged to apply www.BlackArtistsFund.org

Happy International Women’s Day! We are celebrating this year’s theme of gender equity by highlighting impactful female designers. First, to our foremothers, the giants whose shoulders we all stand upon. From the turn of the century to the modernist movement, these are the women who laid the foundation for the profession, making major contributions as designers, educators, writers, artists, and craftswomen. Second, to our mentors, the women who guide and support us both dire...ctly and obliquely. We have read their articles, attended their classes, and visited their projects with awe and admiration. Lastly, to the future, the female leaders that are shaping the profession. The bravery to start their own practices, push the boundaries of innovation and design and be agents of change inspire us daily. #EachforEqual #IWD2020 #atlaslab See more

Thrilled to officially share a sneak peek of our public art proposal for the Sacramento Convention Renovation project! Over the next year, we will be working to realize the sculpture, with slated completion Fall 2020! About the Sculpture: Towering redwoods, pines, cedars and firs comprise most of California’s hillsides and mountain landscape. This landscape has served as a haven for contemplation, adventure and wonder. Over the last decade, shifting climate patterns, have c...ompromised this landscape, causing a loss of 147 million trees. In response, the sculpture aims to highlight this threatened landscape by collecting and reinterpreting the trees lost, into a vertical mosaic. The sculpture itself is a series of wood planks (from salvaged trees lost due to climate change) supported by cylinder frame, that echoes a tree form. Community members are invited to interact with the sculpture through an outward and internal experience. Internally, wood planks frame a view of the sky, as the soaring trees do in the landscapeevoking a contemplative and whimsical experience. Special thanks to @sort_studio supporting ATLAS with parametric modeling! @ Sacramento, California
