Use #ASCELAEarthDay2020 and show us how you’re making a difference. Join our campaign by using the Earth Day profile overlay or background leading up to Earth Day. Join us in celebrating the 50th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22, 2020. Although we are staying home, there are many ways to improve the impact we have on the planet. LA YMF is committed towards sustainability and in celebration of Earth Day posting our actions on social media. Share your pledge at Earthday.or...g! Here are just a few ideas you can do to celebrate Earth Day and make a difference. Celebrating Earth Day Take a moment and appreciate the clean air. The air quality in Los Angeles is better than it has ever been in recent years. Reduce your peak load between 7:30-8:30PM. Let’s reduce our electric greenhouse gas emissions by turning down appliances at this critical hour. Stay motivated and productive at home. By working well at home, you’ll have a better chance to work remotely in the future, reducing your commuter GHGs. Replace outdated light bulbs at home with LED lights, and consider upgrading to high efficiency appliances. Remember your reusable containers such as grocery bags, water bottles, coffee cups, etc., as safety allows during the pandemic. Donate to Earthday.org or another non-profit you believe in. Turn off laptops and desktop screens fully instead of setting to sleep after work to reduce electricity usage.

On Saturday, we hosted the final event of our Annual Engineers Week Extravaganza 2020, Girl Scouts Day hosted at University of California, Los Angeles for 120 Girl Scouts of the Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles! They did three hands-on engineering activities, including a mechanical hand, a stormwater collection device and a catapult, to earn a STEM badge to add to their vests! They were also able to hear from a panel of engineering students on what inspired them to pursue a... degree in engineering! Awesome job to our Girl Scouts Day Lead Nikki Zulueta, who planned today’s event with the help of the ASCE at UCLA Student Chapter! Thanks to everyone who volunteered to help inspire little girls to pursue a career in STEM! Thank you to our Gold Sponsor of Girl Scouts Day City of Los Angeles Bureau of Engineering that made this event possible! @ UCLA

On Friday, we held our 4th event of Engineers Week, where we hosted over 120 high school students at University of Southern California for High School Day! The students were able to learn the Engineering 101 on how to become an engineer from Howard Lum, of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and learn more about environmental engineering and modern research from Dr. Kelly Twomey Sanders, played jenga with an engineering twist, engineered catapults and compe...ted to see which team could launch their ping pong ball the farthest! The engineering essay contest winners were awarded scholarships! After the presentations and activities, the students checked out the Engineering Fair to see what engineering clubs they could join in college! Wonderful job to Claris Rivera, our High School Day Lead, for providing a sneak peak of what majoring in engineering is like for these high schoolers! Also a big thanks to all the volunteers, especially the USC ASCE Student chapter and Junco Nelson for all the planning you helped with! Awesome job everyone! @ University of Southern California

Our 3rd Engineers Week event was Girl Day for 125 middle and high school girls hosted at Caltrans District 7 Headquarters! The girls heard from @labureauengineering Deputy City Engineer Julie Sauter on her engineering passion at LABOE! They did three hands-on engineering activities with 30 professional engineering mentors throughout the day including earthquake proof structures, air powered cars and glitter slime! The girls were awarded their Engineering Essay Contest Schol...arships from the Chief Strategy & Communications Officer of @jacobsconnects, Marietta Hannigan, who also was able to share her inspirational words on her personal story and Jacobs' inclusive culture! The final speaker of the day was Dream Big Film Star and Jacobs' Geotechnical Engineer, Menzer Pehlivan, who had an amazing speech on breaking the mold in engineering! Thank you Jacobs for being our Gold Sponsor for Girl Day! Thank you to all our speakers, and thank you to all our volunteers for making this a very special for all the girls attending! Happy Engineers Week! We started off Engineers Week 2020 on Tuesday with Elementary School Day hosted at the Los Angeles City Hall for over 150 elementary school students where they were able to sit in on a City Council Meeting, test their engineered egg drop devices and engineer their own earthquake-proof gum drop structures! Our @ascelaymf members and @ascemlab participated in the first-ever Presidential Forum on Infrastructure #MovingAmericaForward. We learned from presidential candidates @joebiden , @amyklobuchar , @pete.buttigieg , and @tomsteyer on their views on critical infrastructure needs. As seen on the #ascereportcard, America's infrastructure is deteriorating and vulnerable to climate change. Candidates spoke on their plans to invest, create jobs, and move America forward on areas such as water, wastewater, transportation, airports, broadband, and low-income housing. Thank you to @asce_hq, United For Infrastructure, and all the other corresponding members for making this event happen. @ UNLV

LA YMF got Barry'd! We had such a great time pushing our limits and burning calories at Barry's Venice. Our instructor @therealgagerobinson carefully curated the best playlist to inspire us to sprint faster and lift heavier, and our muscles are still screaming of joy. The best part is we teamed up with @barrys to raise money for Engineers Week 2020, and allow tons of students from Tier 1/Title 1 schools participate in the engineering activities scheduled for next Februar...y. Barry's pushed us to be our best, and we took the call: we are officially part of the (Fit) Fam! Stay tuned and join us February 18-22 at Engineers Week 2020! See more
