**Statement on anti-AAPI violence** Asian American and Pacific Islander communities have always been a vibrant and core part of the ASA membership, the larger aging network and care workers across the country. We at ASA have been saddened and horrified to see the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes, and particularly upset about the impact this has had on elders, many of whom have been targeted and/or are now fearful of being targeted. ASA unreservedly condemns all racism, includin...g anti-Asian racism, and sends its deepest condolences to the families of those affected and all those impacted by hate, intimidation, threats and violence. We also want to extend our gratitude and admiration to the activists and community organizers who have sprung into action in recent weeks to spread awareness and ensure the safety of AAPI communities. We'll be highlighting some of those efforts and ways our members can support them in the comments, below, and on Twitter. #StopAAPIHate

We have been profoundly disturbed by the increase in racism and xenophobic attacks against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Racism, in any form, is unacceptable. Hate has no place at ASA or in our communities. https://bit.ly/2ZnNkIf
This week, ASA's Cindy Morris chats with Compassion and Choices' President & CEO, Kim Callinan, and composers Evan McCormack and Andrew Beall, about how they used music to create innovative messaging.
"Disproportionate suffering and sacrifice reflect vast wealth and income gaps, as well as the erosion of welfare state supports to protect the dignity and rights of U.S. peoples, particularly historically disadvantaged individuals, families, communities and neighborhoods, which affects multiple generations. Simultaneously, Wall Street and billionaire income and wealth skyrockets," write Carroll L. Estes, Jarmin C. Yeh and Nicholas B. DiCarlo https://bit.ly/2Kh9zM6

During a year of crisis, for many this holiday season is a time to confront what M. Katherine Shear, MD, calls "complicated grief." In the face of both a global pandemic and a new reckoning with structural racism, ASA CEO Peter Kaldes talks with Dr. Shear, Director of the Columbia Center for Complicated Grief about what ASA members and everyone in the field of aging should know about grief this season. https://youtu.be/NyuIiMHACTQ

The Eldercare Locator's annual Home for the Holidays campaign encourages discussion of important issues affecting older Americans at a time of year when family and friends often gather. This year’s theme is Staying Connected and Healthy During the COVID-19 Pandemic. On Thursday, Dec 17, ASA’s Leanne Clark-Shirley will be chatting with Sandy Markwood, CEO of the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a) about the campaign and the resources and information available to the Aging Network.
"The reduction in life expectancy is estimated to be even greater among racial and ethnic minorities. Life expectancy is estimated to fall by 2.10 years among Blacks and 3.05 years among Latinos. The decline would be 0.68 years among whites." https://n.pr/2XI1XVY
