Work title - lagbaja, Tamedu ati Ogbeni (Anybody, nobody and somebody) Dimension - life- size Medium - stone cast, glass beads, wood, resin and metal Artist : peju alatise... Artist's statement: it is true that culture is a living organism and there is no encounter without cultural contamination. Over the years the cultural practice of engaging with one's ancestors of the Yorubas through Egungun ceremonies has had its fair share of contamination. The practices can be related to as a consultation of one's history to better direct the present and d future. The depth of communication with one's past for the elevation of self and community has been watered down to superstitions, tourist spectacles and entertainment for strangers; one could even include the extortion of spectators by certain opportunists. Christianity, the military and Islam are contaminants of the Egungun practice. But! No society of sound mind (as Ms. N'Gone Fall says) can claim the absolute purity of its culture. I want to be part of those that evolve the egungun practice while maintaining the engagement of past knowledge and wisdom.
