So with the PG&E power outages i as an electrician of fourty years feel the need to caution each and everyone of you that think having a portable generator is a solution. Most portable generators are gas operated and are not extremely efficient, you will need to refill them regularly. Keep in mind that the genset has run for long periods of time and are " HOT " which is a fire hazard as well as that five gallon gas container sitting close by. Also when you use a genset you ...will probably set it far enough away as to not have to hear it running. This is the next problem, the farther away you set your genset the longer your power cord will have to be. A one hundred foot extension cord that most home owners have is either a 16ga. or 14ga. cord. These extension cords are good for less than eight to tens amps. max at one hundred feet. Your refrigerator alone draws that much power, so you can do the math and see the danger and the limitations of using a genorator. If you feel the need to use a genset place the unit close enough to use two 12 gauge heavy duty fifty foot ext. cords spliting the load equally as posible. Do not use multi strips to plug multiple appliances in at the same time. If you have heavy loads like a washing machine, refrigerator, freezer, or space heaters rotate these loads. Space heaters take a lot of power so please be careful trying to stay warm. So here's the math on gensets, a 3500 watt genorator will give you...... 3500 watts 120 volts = 29 amps 4500 watts 120 volts = 37.5 amps. These are full load calculations, most gensets will not run at full loads at any length of time without burning up. The best case scenario to have a generator and not worry about it is have it professionally installed with an automatic transfer switch that turns on and off the generator any time you lose power from the utility as long as its maintained. DO NOT CONNECT YOUR GENSET TO YOUR ELECTRICAL PANEL, YOU CAN BACK FEED THE POWER LINE AND KILL A UTILITY WORKER TRYING TO RESTORE YOUR POWER ! If you have any question please call or text me im more than willing to help ! Thank You Brian Archbold Archbold Electric 650-670-6615 cell Please Repost This To Your Page !
