VVC Virtual Music Ensemble Highlight, Day 2: "Summertime" from Gershwin's Porgy and Bess George Gershwin's opera Porgy and Bess premiered on Broadway in 1935 and was most recently featured as the opening production of the Metropolitan Opera's 2019 season. Though the work has incited difficult conversations throughout its complex history, this "folk opera" was the first of its kind and has remained a pillar of music history in America. This summer, some of our fantastic colleagues in the English department launched a "One Book, One Campus" project at VVC, featuring the book Washington Black by Esi Edugyan. Our department has been excited to be a part of this collaboration, exploring genres and styles based on the historical eras and locations found within the text. Over the next few days, we'll be highlighting the virtual performances of our students and community members from the semester. Singing played m...any roles in the culture of slavery, one such being a form of communication for those enslaved. Specifically, it was used as a tool in the underground railroad where seemingly benign lyrics were actually covert instructions for methods of travel in the journey to freedom. "Wade in the Water" is one example of such song. This arrangement is performed by VVC's College Singers and produced by Mario Fuentes. The Victor Valley College Agriculture & Natural Resource Department will hold its Fall 2020 Plant Sale October 19th 24th (Monday Saturday), from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The community is invited to choose from wide selection of landscape plants, house plants, succulents, and cacti to purchase.
