One of the most common mistakes my clients make is seeking approval. The truth is, it’s WAY easier to demand approval than people think; and you don’t have t...o be all Donald Trump about it either. In fact, most times, demanding approval actually HELPS YOU LIVE LIFE ON YOUR TERMS. People love to listen and respect someone who is sure of their own worth. But truthfully, demanding approval is just the beginning. And if you aren’t demanding it yet, it means there are underlying issues you need to address. Here are 2 areas, in my opinion, you have to have locked down BEFORE you demand approval in your life. - Honesty You can no longer pretend your way through life. You must start giving it to people straight, no chaser. This is the foundation for expectations which comes next. Here’s the thing, there are a literally tons of different ways to tell the truthwhite lies, partial truth, only what they ask about, etcbut none of that is actually honesty. Because when half-truths are good enough your entire life stalls out because the only person you’re actually hiding from is you. This is the best way to end up sad and alone. Without self-honesty you can’t move forward. This doesn’t mean to beat yourself up either; honesty and criticism are not the same thing. - Expectations If you spend all your energy on figuring out what other people think of you and never deciding what you BELIEVE about yourself, you’re in real trouble. Sometimes it’s scary to disagree with friends and family, who feel like the only people who love you, to love yourself; after all, finally feeling happy day in and day out isn’t going to happen on accident. here’s the deal, unless you can figure out how to LOVE AND RESPECT YOURSELF, you’ll always be hoping other people will. Contrary to what you learned from your mother, your father or school, what other’s think of you is bogus. It all starts with you and builds from there. If there’s no you, then the difficult relationships will continue and so will the empty feelings that follow. Keep learning and growing and let me know if this resonates for you!
