It all starts with the Any person can benefit from a strong ankle and foot. An ankle sprain is one of the most common injuries in sport. While strengthening an ankle is nowhere near as sexy as training big muscle groups, it’s imperative to have sound running mechanics. Improving tissue integrity of the foot and ankle to absorb and administer large forces is a much higher priority to me than a 300-lb squat. ... #traintotransfer

When I get the opportunity to work with little ones I try to disregard their learning curve and provide moments where they can call upon their movement literacy. Ladder work is a great tool to work rhythm and foot patterning. Regardless of what drill is being utilized we’ve gotta be aware of the child’s confidence in completing the task. Ms. Miley has a ridiculous upside and I was reminded this morning why I enjoy workin’ with the youth so much. After walking through the... drill a few times it was awesome to see her piece together the feel of running while performing. She was aware of what I expected and wanted to prove to herself that she could get the task done. My job is to ensure her that I’m supportive of her journey. Can’t do it doesn’t exist here, can’t do it YET is how we use that phrase in these walls. Kudos to everyone out there learning their way! We don’t have to have all the skills today. With time & effort our ability to learn new tasks will eventually be achieved. @acscottphotography

Keep it simple. Compound exercises that target movement over multiple joints are great tools for strength improvement. Our strength programs focus on functional movement and age appropriateness. Understanding regressions and progressions to meet the athlete at their current skill level enables us to work with all age ranges and abilities. ... Come experience the difference! My favorite thing about coaching is the relationship building. Witnessing shy, introverted people begin to break out and believe in their greatness. It’s natural to experience doubt and uncertainty. That’s part of the growing process. But how does one overcome this self doubt? With small victories. Over and over again. With each bit of accomplishment those doubts begin to change to belief. ... Once an athlete believes we care about more than just their athletic prowess their commitment to the program grows stronger. Their intent more focused. And this subtle detail is where the coach and pupil relationship gets special. @_jonlilly_

As summer winds down the mission remains the same: Establish the basics. We all understand that speed and quickness are skills that dominate in any sport. But the prerequisite for speed is balance and coordination. Our programming isn’t sport specific. It’s human specific. Others coach, we TEACH. This reverse hyper from westside barbell has been an awesome addition to the facility. The reverse hyper is a fantastic tool to build posterior chain muscles and strengthen an athletes hip awareness. It increases stability and requires the athlete to maintain proper hip positioning. Many athletes have an anterior tilt that causes the hips to tilt forward. In this particular movement pattern I wanted to emphasize the drive leg staying engaged into the pad. This position mimics the drive phase in running. The goal isn’t to train muscles but train movements. #traintotransfer

One of my favorite training tools for children is a medicine ball. The versatility of the medball is great because when a child sees the ball they have an idea of what to do with a ball. Throw, slam, catch etc. One of the issues in teaching strength and power movements to kids with traditional weights is educating them on how to use barbells. While there are kid bars these tools aren’t everyday objects. Thus the learning curve is much steeper. Using devices that children are familiar with encourages them to work with less hesitance. Share some of your favorite movements with the medicine ball below. #medballexercises

Jon captured some heat with this one!! I’m always humbled when I’m called upon to improve an athletes off season training. When I met with Peyton our goal was to work on acceleration and her short bursts of quickness. Had a tremendous time getting to know this young lady and discover what makes her tick! She’s achieved a phenomenal milestone and earned the opportunity to play at the professional ranks and her drive to continue playing at a high level is evident during every training session. As a coach it’s a joy to work with these talents. They’re just different and it’s immediately apparent why they are rewarded for their efforts! Thank you so much @peypereaaa for entrusting me with your time! Lookin’ forward to watchin’ your play this season! Shine bright Pey!

The reverse hyper is a lift i have a love hate relationship with! @athleticfighter had us on this movement damn near every day in the weight room! As an athlete the posterior chain is critical to propulsive movement. Strengthening our backside musculature improves the ability to extend and push the hips forward. Our focus on this particular movement this day was to isolate the single leg while the other leg was positioned in the drive phase. Strengthening positions should replicate postures we want the athlete to utilize in dynamic situations. Slowing things down and forcing the body to hold positions stimulates the nervous system and increases coordination. #traintotransfer

Year after year I’ve been blessed to forge relationships with young children sharing my passion for movement and sport. Never has my purpose been more rewarding than last year. I can’t thank the athletes and families that have supported this dream of mine and continue to allow me to guide and shape these young minds. Thank each and every one of you for enabling me to live authentically. I’m amazed at what the space has evolved into and beyond excited at the ideas that have yet to manifest. Let’s all prepare to build our communities up and restore what we’ve grown accustomed to as normalcy. The grind will continue and the fruits of our labor will be precious victories. Dream big! Fail forward and be willing to receive all the good that will present itself on the journey!
