So many say this is the easiest plant in the world to grow, but nothing has given me more trouble than the moringa oleifera. Going against traditional wisdom, I... significantly amended the soil where I just put her in - 50/50 sand and native dirt. That said, I did make the hole square. Wish me luck, we'll see. See more
Forgot I had this diamond planter box I made several years ago out back. Brought it up front and turned it into a kitchen herb + garden box. Thyme, Dill, Cilant...ro, Mustard Greens, some Aurora Peppers we got at a Co-Op in Idaho while driving out to Montana, a watermelon from April's fruit exchange and Lorien Silverleaf, two of your tomatillo, and the front is French Marigolds. See more
I love how striking this humming bird sage is. Lori Saldaña this was one of our scores from Armstrong Garden Centers #aniccaacres
Just another Monday at Anicca Acres.
Was about to break open one of my last bales of decomposed straw and thought I would show you all what it looked like.
In celebration of National Compost Awareness Week, I present the side quarter of our property freshly covered with decomposed straw. Not only are we working to remediate the soil in this area but have a multi-grafted nectarine tree (w/apricots and peaches grafted on), a Fuji Apple, two Roger's Red Grapes, a Banana Tree and a soon to be planted Panache Fig or another Banana (still haven't decided). We collected the straw from various locations holding "Pumpkin Patches" during last year's Halloween - Thanksgiving season. Stacked it up and wet it down on a regular basis - you should have seen all the organic material yesterday when I broke the bales and started spreading it around!
I think the banana flower might be one of my favorite flowers. I love this flower for a multitude of reasons, but in my mind, there is probably no plant more sensual, more sexual than this - it reminds me of life in all its ooey-gooey wonderfulness.
My problem is such - as one who is staunchly against GM seeds I refuse to argue on the basis of science and health as its an argument that can never be won. They have their scientists, we have ours. But, in my mind, we have other, better arguments against GM seed - GMO's fix a problem that doesn't need to be fixed, put control of the worlds seeds in the hands of a few companies and in no way have a smaller environmental impact - GMO's require farmers to use more and more her...bicides as weeds - much like bacteria and antibiotics - become resistant. Famine is a problem in developing countries for reasons far beyond anything GMO's will ever be able to fix; improper use of farmland, mono cropping and straight up land grabs by despots, dictators, and capitalists. We have the means to restore farmlands via Holistic Management. The problem is the way we currently practice agriculture and unchecked capitalism. Become or start a seed library, grow a wide range of diverse crops in your garden and take part in things like backyard exchanges with people you trust. GMO's are not the answer whether science proves them fine or not.
Bee rescue No. 2 - pre sunrise operations!
That's right! We're just about ready to have bees again at the Acres!
How we celebrate Earth Day here at Anicca Acres - four rows of corn planted (Dale Eblacas Claudia De la Cruz San Diego Seed Library), mulberry put into the ground and a row of tomato plants put in the ground using the Native American technique of burying fish heads and eggs shells in the ground with the plants.
What a wonderful Easter surprise!
