A friend of mine who is also an accountant shared this. It’s been a rough few weeks for our profession. Not just because we’re going through the same situation as everyone else. But because we are supposed to have answers and solutions. We pivoted our company weeks ahead of most to get our clients help. There are some firms that have yet to pivot at all. There are other firms who just sent everyone home unemployed at day 1. It’s a strange and scary time for everyone. Temp...ers have flared up. People are stressed. Kristen commented earlier this week that the pharmacies are going to have to start handing out crazy pills soon (I’ll take some ). Wednesday I even had what can only be labeled as a temper tantrum, declared I hated the beige walls of my office and took a 2 hour walk around my neighborhood. During this time I even missed a Zoom meeting with a potential client. I skipped the call because I was so low I couldn’t imagine what I would say. How I would react. Would I hurt them more than I helped with my current state of mind? The truth... I’ve fought back tears on more Zoom calls than I wish to admit over the last 4 weeks. Video calls suck, because you can see people’s fear, sadness and frustration. I’ve seen more people cry over the last 4 weeks than the last year of my life. It takes a toll. On everyone. Not just me or accountants. Healthcare workers, police officers, attorneys, dentists, contractors, daycare owners, teachers... everyone is hurting. There are many leaders in my position that would say this post is showing weakness. It could hurt your business. Stay strong. Nobody is strong 100% of the time and pretending that you are can be dangerous. If my clients or friends need to say they are scared, I get it. It’s ok. If you need to cry, I can listen. I don’t judge. Everyone has a low point. The key to getting through it is to make sure you’re never down there alone. Never let yourself hit rock bottom alone. And never drag someone down there with you that isn’t prepared to be there. Mental health is critical for business owners right now... take care of yourself. Feed your positivity, and allow yourself to acknowledge that this is a bad situation. You’re allowed to be frustrated, sad, angry, hurt, and more. Lots of emotions are going around right now. But on the other side, we all have to be strong for our families, clients, employees. Make sure you have a trusted advisor you can lean on... therapist, attorney, accountant, business coach, spiritual leader, life coach, anyone that will understand that you can trust!
