Hi, everyone, I have been updating my patients through Constant Contact with information about COVID 19’s impact on re-opening our practice and what the greater plastic surgery community is thinking. We have been having webinars with members of the Aesthetic Society on Zoom to discuss how and when aesthetic practices can open. We want to do it safely for our patients, their families and our staff and ourselves, too. As you know, we need testing to determine who we ca...n have close contact with. This is needed in a surgical and med spa practice. Rutgers in New Jersey has developed a saliva COVID test that correlates 100% with specimens taken from the nose or throat. See https://1health.io It works like this: under direct observation, like with an at-home Zoom visit, you would give a specimen, mail it in and get the result digitally in 48 hours. If you did strict social distancing, and the test were negative, there is a good chance that you would be free of the virus when seen in the office in the next day or two. I have put in an order for these. In the office, we could do an onsite, 10-minute antibody test for IgM and IgG. I have ordered these also. IgM picks up acute infection, but doesn’t turn positive for 5-7 days, and IgG shows you are recovering from an infection and have immunity antibodies. If you have a negative COVID test, and do social distancing and have a negative antibody test in the office, about 7 days after your COVID test, you would be at low risk of being infected or infectious. But if you did not enforce strict social distancing during that time like going back to work in a high-risk environment where people worked closely together and/or did not use masks, you could still be infected and in the window where those tests would not detect the infection. We would ask you about that and if you had an increased risk due to contacts, you would need further testing. That’s about the state of the art right now. Add to that, there is a cost to testing, as these kits and tests have to be paid for. I am told that there are CPT and ICD10 codes that we can give to patients that they can use to submit the test costs to their insurance companies for reimbursement. The saliva tests are going first to essential healthcare providers, but they are ramping up and will produce 300,000 kits monthly in May. An Update from us on COVID-19 Dear Patients of Dr. Lowen We stopped seeing patients in the physical office other than post-ops and some follow-up patients this week.... I am keeping regular office hours for Facetime, Skype, Zoom and phone consults and am available to all my patients at all times.. This has worked out remarkably well so far.
