You may not have heard of the "Kissing Case" of 1958, but here goes. It was the arrest, conviction, and lengthy sentencing of two young black boys in Monroe, No...rth Carolina. their names were 9 years old James Thompson, shown on the left in this photo, and 7 years old David Simpson, on the right. They were charged with rape for being kissed on the cheek by a white girl. The two had played together when James accompanied his mother to her work as a domestic for the girl's family. Sissy Marcy, a 7-year-old white girl told her mother she had kissed James and she became enraged, called the police, and accused the boy of raping her daughter. The boys were arrested, separated from their parents for over a week, beaten by grown white men who threatened to kill them if they did not confess. Upon being held for three months in the city jail, they were charged, convicted of molestation, and sentenced to Reform school until they reached age 21. The leader of the local Monroe NAACP Chapter was Robert Williams. Williams was a fierce advocate on armed self-defense almost two decades before the Black Power Movement and was an inspiring figure for SNCC and the Black Panther Party of the 1960s. As early as the 1940s, Williams was advocating self-reliance for migrant workers and victims of civil rights atrocities against black people. He is widely known for a book he wrote in 1962, entitled "Negroes With Guns". It was Williams who galvanized widespread support to free the boys from all across the country and abroad. Protests occurred daily even drawing the attention of then-president Eisenhower who weighed in.
