Every event, session, performance, and person at this year's #RhythmInBlack virtual #BlackHistoryMonth event has a bigger story. On Feb. 5th, please join us to celebrate each of those unique stories and our shared stories. Sign up now for FREE! : https://bit.ly/38JKeEc #Storytime 25 years ago, Hughes Middle School Algebra Teacher Dr. Vicki McCloyn created the Young, Gifted, and Talented Black History Club Performance Group to give her students an outlet beyond just perfo...rming. Dr. McCloyn not only instills a love for dance in her students, but also commitment, public speaking skills, health, drive, and the confidence to take steps in the direction of their dreams and future careers. From a young age, Dr. McCloyn knew she wanted to make the world a better place, especially for the Black community. When she looked at the people receiving awards, who were on stage, who were succeeding in the public eye she was frustrated by the lack of Black representation. Her grandmother once told her, "Whenever you see a problem, don't whine about it do something about it." So, she did. Not only has Dr. McCloyn made a difference in the Long Beach community and education system, but in the lives of hundreds of students who she has had the honor of watching grow into amazing adults who still credit Young, Gifted, and Talented Black History Performance Club as a turning point in their lives. Catch the 2021 Young, Gifted, and Talented Black History Club Performance Group show on Feb. 5th at #RhythmInBlack!

During these times of crisis, ASCA has collaborated with organizations engaged in bringing resources to people in need. Andy St. residents have benefited, receiving N95 masks, food vouchers, disinfecting liquid and hand sanitizer to help keep them safe and fed. Our grateful appreciation to the Long Beach Chapter of the NAACP, the Long Beach Center for Economic Inclusion, Barton Brands of California and Councilmember Rex Richardson, District 9.
