Time goes by fast but what happens on the mat will stay in our memory for a very long time! Here is a picture with some of my first students back in 2004-2005, Brazil. I look at them now, and I still can remember their games, their struggles on the mat and many good things that we were able share on and off the mat together as team! I miss those days very much!

He is learning about competition today... He made me feel so special, I don’t remember seeing anybody so excited the way he was while checking out all my medals and asking me questions about each one of them. I’m thankful for being able to spend the time with my son while I’m working making açaí bowls and apparel ( he is open to help and he bothers me to make açaí bowls lol), I hope things get better soon so I can get back on the mat again to do what I love to do. When you f...ind the right place to train and step on the mat to learn Jiu-Jitsu you will learn that life is tough and comparing it to Jiu-Jitsu you will learn that it’s ok to lose sometimes, it’s ok to go through pain sometimes and you find out that there are a lot of frustrations and uncertain times in life but what Jiu-Jitsu teaches us the most is that no matter how many times we can fail, if you don’t give up you will succeed one day! Good Morning Everyone, I want to thank you all one more time for the support during the Covid-19(you will see me saying this for a while now)... I also want to let you guys know that I have been at the academy everyday from 10:00am to 7:30pm selling açaí bowls, pressing apparel and going on zoom for the kids and adults. Here’s the reason why I’m writing this today:... Weeks ago, I was in a very dark place (feeling very depressed) not knowing what was going to happen to my academy and to my family, but because of some of my awesome friends and students that continued to check on me, I was able to fight it through and figure out a way to come out of that dark place. Now I am in a fully FIGHT MODE for my academy, my family and friends in need. I know I have left some of you guys down while I was going through this so I’m here to say I AM SORRY and If there’s anything I can do to fix what potentially could have hurt our friendship or changed the way you used to look up to Professor Andre, please let me know Ok now I am going to say the reason why I’m writing this... I’m writing this because I believe there might be someone hurting in need of help, in that dark place just like I was before and I care about you, I care about every single one of you that have been with me as student, as a friend and as part of my Jiu-Jitsu family... Thanks for keeping me busy everyone... I was only able to take two pictures today and I haven’t had lunch yet, but guess what? My gym was closed for a long time, and a lot of students were affected by Covid-19 and froze their accounts ( and of course I also have so much support from students that believe in me and believe in our academy and have been able to support, keeping their membership active). I’m really tired right now and it’s hard to find the right words but I ...just want to thank everyone that has been supporting me through this, old students, friends, students of other academies you all have been in my thoughts and prayers... My wake up call happened this past week, after I was feeling down, feeling like I had lost everything that I had dreamed about with Jiu-Jitsu, but I was able to stop, think and put something together(I am not sure until when @realbowls will be around) and maybe in your head you think I’m crazy but let me tell you something, I either think outside the box or it’s all over, not only for me but for people that I love and fight for... Andre de Freitas Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is OPENED (for açaí) and Professor Andre is selling açaí bowls for curbside and pickup only and this is how I’m keeping myself and my hope alive. If you want to give a shot and try a real açaí bowl... I will be here, at my Jiu-Jitsu Home with a mask and gloves on, scared, working, doing what I can right now. In this video, I show one of the most common mistakes beginners make from closed guard. It happens very often while they try to scape from it. If you are new to Jiu-Jitsu, you might have seen higher belts during live training using just one of their hands to break free from closed guard, even though they expose themselves to a triangle choke. Most of the times,they are able to accomplish their goal making you think you can do the same. Wrong! Occasionally, you might succeed... trying to do just like them but my piece of advice is: if you are having trouble escaping from closed guard, and you have been getting stuck into a lot of triangle chokes, make sure to ask questions related to it to your professor and coaches. Done get me wrong, by paying attention to the higher belts you will learn a lot and it is a great way to improve your Jiu-Jitsu (but some times they are not doing it the right way). The point here is, this simple mistake of trying to scape from closed guard using only one hand as I demonstrate with Ted Bear could become a bad habit, leading you to start getting stuck inside a lot of very tight triangle chokes. So for now, keep both hands inside if you are locked in closed guard or bring both hands outside if you are able to break free from your opponent’s closed guard. Remember, The best way to defend a triangle choke, is AVOIDING THE TRIANGLE CHOKE!

SELF DEFENSE : Avoiding the fight throughout communication if possible. BACK ATTACK : Using the right moment to attack the opponent’s back and avoid getting hit in case of altercation. REAR NAKED CHOKE : Time to negotiate again and end the altercation . Set rules in case you are dealing with a bully. ... PARENTS: This is a great way to bound with your kids, teaching them how to defend themselves. They will exercise and have fun. Make sure you are present and if you are new to Jiu-Jitsu it’s important to know when to tap while practicing. #ddrjjstockton #selfdefenseforeveryone

The cross grip control will open up opportunities for different attacks from closed guard while you are controlling the cross collar and controlling the sleeve as it shows in the video. #ddrjjstockton #andredefreitasbjj

Very strong cross collar grip control from closed guard. While you are on the bottom, use your left hand to control the cross collar, use your right hand to control the person’s wrist and from there we can initiate a lot of attacks. In this video I show the apaga mas não bate choke using my knuckles. The loop choke is also a great option from this same setup. #andrefreitasbjj #ddrjj
