Why you shouldn't purchase a pool pump of the web. About 10 years ago Pentair came out with one of the first models of variable speed pool pumps; the Intelliflo 4x160. At that point there weren't very many options to choose from. In the last 5 years or so, the market has been floated with dozens of new VS models. Manufactures now offer medium head and full head pumps, 120 V or 240 V, remote compatible or stand alone, 1 yr warranty or 4 yr warranty. Unless you are a pool profe...ssional, it's very likely you are going to end up with the wrong pump on your hands. To make matters worse (or better), some manufactures are pulling their professional lines off of the web. Not only that, if you get "lucky " and are able to get your hands on one of these models, the manufacture will void the warranty on the equipment. So now, you have gone from a 4 yr warranty to either 60 days or any at all. Leave it up to a pool professional; chances are it will cost you a few more bucks to have it properly installed and programmed but you won't have to deal with any issues down the line. How to estimate your energy savings when replacing a single speed pump for a variable speed one. In this example, the existing pump was a 2 hp running 6 hrs a day. The energy consumption in a month is 419 kW (Voltage x Amps x hrs a day x 30 days a month / 1000). The new Pentair Intelliflo was programmed to use 100 W in low speed for 12 hrs a day, and 1000 W in high speed for 2 hrs a day. The energy consumption in a month is now 96 kW.... We are now using 323 kW less than before. At 25 cents a kilowatt the savings in your electric bill are $80 a month or $960 a year! Recently, we have been called to troubleshoot several heaters that cycle on and off. Many times, the heater will fire but over-heat within a few seconds due to poor water flow through the heat exchanger causing the heater to turn itself off. We replaced this 40 years old Anthony heater with a Pentair MasterTemp 400. Huge improvement in efficiency and reliability. The Anthony heater was actually plumbed out of the system most likely due to a leak in the heat exchanger. The Gas Company offers a $300 rebate for units like this one through 2018. Small collaboration with Pools by Ben relocating some old underground valves. I wanted to post about this because normally I wouldn't perform this kind of work. I hold a C61/D35 license that allows me to repair and install pool equipment. However, it does not allow me to perform underground plumbing nor electrical.
