We just found a bottle of our very first vintage, 2012 Cabernet. We had set this bottle aside because the label application was wonky. We opened it tonight and it was amazing! If I knew where I’d be today in 2012 when I was hand-picking this fruit with my soon-to-be wife and her dad, I wouldn’t have believed it. All things considered, life is so good. Our local grape growing family lost a legend last week. Our friend Ron Siletto, purveyor of some of the rarest grapes in the region, passed away. Ron was responsible for growing our Pinot Gris, Trousseau, and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as our San Benito County Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The quality of his fruit was only surpassed by the quality of the man himself. Funny, smart, successful, and often a little ornery, Ron was one of a kind. We are just heartbroken.

Here’s a picture of our resident falconer (and best dad ever), Bill Murphy, and a baby falcon he hatched, a future savior of our fruit! Falconry is used in the vineyard for bird abatement. As grapes ripen and harvest nears, pest birds see an opportunity for a feast. Falcons are flown in the vineyard to keep the pest birds away, and the berries safe to be harvested and made into wine.
