Calling all young artists! Apply now for the 2021 Young Artist Showcasefeaturing YOU! The Young Artist Showcase is a virtual art show featuring the creative works of Anaheim residents/students in grades 7-12. You can apply for the opportunity to have your art displayed in our virtual art show and share your talents with the community. All applications must be submitted online by your art teacher or school administrator at the Downtown Anaheim Center Gallery website. Student... submissions will not be accepted without the teacher application. For more information, please visit Anaheim.net/205/Center-Gallery. The first review of applications will be January 15, 2021 so apply today! Who can apply? o Any Anaheim student or resident in grades 7-12. How to apply? o Complete the attached application and return to your art teacher or school administrator. Applications must be submitted by school personnel only. o Provide 3 to 5 digital images of artwork that you created. o Provide 30 second video introduction (optional). Image & Video Submission Guidelines o Submit 3-5 digital photos of artwork with a title and description. All photos must be clear and submitted in the form of a .jpg and cropped to 1018px, or approximately the size of a square cropping tool in any photo editor. Any graphics should fit and remain legible within this space. o Videos must be 30 seconds in length or less. If recording on a cell phone, all videos must be recorded with phone placed horizontally. Monica De la Cruz is passionate about creating mosaic artworks, and she has also experimented with clay. Since beginning mosaic classes at the Braille Institute, she has created a family tree mosaic, tiled serving trays, stunning tiled picture frames in red, green, and black, and much more. Despite the pandemic, she continues creating new mosaics and mixed med...ia artworks from home. Having suffered from low vision and light sensitivity since birth, Leathers has always expressed herself through visual art. In the 80s and 90s, Leathers created custom sewing, graphics and printing for an advertising company. She also taught at the Art Institute in Fresno for a brief period. Today, Leathers is associated with the Braille Institute and her n...ew work has evolved into more dimensional realms including photographs and reworked pieces, along with new originals. Center Gallery’s Virtual Art Gallery continues with art from Patrick Garrido of The Braille Institute of America. Patrick Garrido was born in Guam and raised in Southern California. He struggles with low vision from diabetic retinopathy in his left eye and his right eye has a scarred cornea. Lynn Coats marries her interests in art and technology to create unique, digitally manipulated smartphone images. Coats also uses her photos as the basis for fascinating painted collages; she layers photos printed on canvas paper to a panel, then she coats the surface with stenciled shapes in acrylic paint. Helen Fukuhara began her visual arts education at the Braille Institute of America in September of 1987. Despite being blind from birth, Fukuhara has pursued a range of fine arts in earnest, and today, she remains a prolific and passionate artist who works in ceramic, mosaic, printmaking, and fiber arts. Douglas Lawhorn is a highly creative artist who currently takes classes at the Braille Institute in Anaheim. He experiments with origami paper folding, sculpture with found objects, and wirewrapped sculpture such as this bonsai tree. William Brown is a regular student at the Braille Institute’s neighborhood center in Laguna Hills, where he has taken workshops including Beginning Basketry and Intro to Digital Photo and Collage. On his own time, Brown is a prolific painter and paints beautiful scenes including landscapes, waterscapes, and more. Center Gallery’s Virtual Art Gallery continues with a new exhibit brought to you by the Braille Institute of America. The virtual show will feature 12 artists i...n a series that will run from August 27th through November 19th. Our first artist is Andy Parra. Andy Parra was diagnosed with glaucoma when he was sixteen, and by the age of twenty-three, he lost a significant amount of eyesight. Today, Parra blends his love of the outdoors with his amazing family, and he captures those unique moments in photos. Parra takes his photography one step further by using smartphone apps to adjust color, texture, and contrast. The Braille Institute of America (BIA) Anaheim’s art students span a spectrum of ages, backgrounds, and artistic interests.
