Wildfires have become increasingly prevalent and destructive. In 2020, more ... than 58,000 fires burned some 10 million acres. This was the most acreage burned in any year on record.1 Here are other facts about wildfires, and suggestions on how to prepare for them: Q: What is a wildfire? A: It’s a fire that burns out of control in a natural area such as a forest. Q: What causes wildfires? A: About 85 percent of wildfires are caused by humans. They can result from campfires, burning debris, equipment malfunction, discarded cigarettes, or arson. Lightning can also cause wildfires. Q: When is wildfire season? A: While wildfires happen all year long, the risk increases as the weather gets hotter and drier. In the Western U.S., fires peak in September, October and November. Q: What states are the most susceptible? A: While all states are susceptible to wildfire, the largest have burned in the West. Q: How do I know if there’s a wildfire in my area? A: You can sign up for your community’s warning system, or get alerts from the Emergency Alert System or National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration Weather Radio. Q: How can I best prepare?
