Weather Update: Greater Antilles/Bahamas/Southeast US Major Hurricane Matthew Matthew has strengthened some during the day today as it continues to move slowly ...to the north. Weather conditions in Haiti are likely beginning to deteriorate rapidly as the storm is approaching. The forecast track of this storm has also shifted a bit more to the west in the 3-5 day timeframe, so persons in Florida and the southeastern US should be paying particular attention to this system. Currently, the storm is located about 140 miles south of Tiburon, Haiti or 225 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Winds have increased to 140mph, which is a very strong category 4 storm. Movement has increased just a bit, still to the north now at 10mph. Preparations in Haiti and Jamaica should be rushed to completion at this point. Persons in the Bahamas should be making their final preparations as well. Major airports in Haiti are closing today, with some airports closed in Jamaica as well. Here is the summary of the current watches and warnings: A Hurricane WARNING is in effect for Jamaica / Haiti / Cuban provinces of Guantanamo, Santiago de Cuba, Holguin, Granma, and Las Tunas / Southeastern Bahamas, including the Inaguas, Mayaguana, Acklins, Crooked Island, Long Cay, and Ragged Island / Central Bahamas, including Long Island, Exuma, Rum Cay, San Salvador, and Cat Island. A Hurricane WATCH is in effect for Cuban province of Camaguey / Turks and Caicos Islands / Northwestern Bahamas, including the Abacos, Andros Island, Berry Islands, Bimini, Eleuthera, Grand Bahama Island, and New Providence A Tropical Storm WARNING is in effect for Dominican Republic from Barahona westward to the border with Haiti. A Tropical Storm WATCH is in effect for Dominican Republic from Puerto Plata westward to the border with Haiti. The major change to the forecast this afternoon is that the storm is now expected to move closer to southern Florida as a major hurricane by Thursday. This could significantly impact the densely populated areas of Miami/Ft. Lauderdale/Palm Beach. The forecast track is also looking to possibly provide a significant threat to the Carolinas over the weekend. This part of the forecast is still a bit far out, however, anyone in these areas should begin to insure that supplies are in order and should the threat of the storm increase you are prepared to act quickly.
