As you know, California and the Southwest are experiencing a record-breaking drought. What you may not realize is that Meteorologists and Emergency Planners recently predicted a 95 percent likelihood of a strong El Niño event. Confidence continues to grow that this El Niño will be one of the strongest over the past 50 years. This could mean much-needed relief from our historic drought; however, ground hardening from the drought along with several years of wildfires have dest...royed the terrain’s ability to absorb water. This puts the West at an even higher risk for flooding in the near future. And all homes are at risk. In fact, nearly 25 percent of all flooding actually occurs in non-Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHA). In an article from CBS San Francisco, FEMA’s Jeff Lusk says: At least 30,000 Californians have let their flood insurance policies lapse, accounting for a 12 percent drop more than any other state. The removal of subsidies following Hurricane Sandy made these policies more expensive and could also be a cause of the decrease. Flood insurance can cover up to $250,000 in damage, while the average FEMA grant only amounts to $5,000. Aging levies in California will also put them at high risk for flooding. And homeowners may be unaware they are in flood zones, as FEMA continues to create new maps. With El Niño looming, it is advised to renew or write policies now and not wait for new flood maps. TODAY IS THE LAST DAY UNTIL OCTOBER TO SIGN UP FOR HEALTH CARE UNDER ACA (OBAMACARE). As of today the extension is only for those who have created an online account or otherwise contacted covered.ca to attempt to sign up. According to their rules, you will be fined if not in the system by today... and then you cannot sign up and get any health coverage if you are currently uncovered, until OCTOBER... with coverage starting January of 2015. Just some FYI for everyone regardi...ng health coverage and CoveredCA March 31st is the last day to enroll no exceptions and no extensions. People have to be signed up by then. If they are applying directly with a company, their premiums need to be paid by then. If they are applying with CoveredCA.com they have to have their premium paid by 4/24. If someone doesn’t sign up by 3/31 then they cannot get insurance until the next open enrollment and it won’t be effective until Jan 1st. If they don’t get insurance now, there is no help for them if something happens they will be 100% responsible for the bill. The penalty for not having insurance is $95/per adult & $47.50/per child in the household OR 1% of the household income whichever is greater! Maximum fine for 2014 is $285.
