What is a space maintainer? Baby teeth provide and hold space for the permanent teeth and guide them into the correct position. Normally, baby teeth are pushed out by the adult/permanent teeth, but in some cases, the baby teeth are lost prematurely due to trauma or decay. When baby teeth are lost prematurely a space maintainer might be considered by your child’s pediatric dentist.
