Almond Lane uses cover crops - plants that are planted to cover the soil rather than for the purpose of being harvested. Cover crops manage soil erosion, soil fertility, soil quality, water, weeds, pests, diseases, biodiversity and wildlife in an agroecosysteman ecological system managed and shaped by humans. The addition of cover crops increases plant diversity and helps to support biodiversity in soil microbes and beneficial wildlife.
We have been working hard to create a year round habitat for beneficial insects such as native pollinators... The most commonly known pollinator is the bee. We are proud to announce that we are partnering with Watt’s Solitary Bees to kickstart our beneficial insect population in the orchards. We’re going to incubate them, release them, and ideally they will begin to live in our orchards year round. By doing this, we are creating an established population which allows us to reduce independence on commercial pollination services, giving our orchards more biodiversity.
As mentioned before, there are many contributing factors of soil health. Almond Lane also uses a unique method for soil regeneration. We use grazers such as goats and sheep, that regenerate the soil with their natural fertilizers. This provides organic nutrients and micro bacteria that continue to break up organic matter and create plant available nutrients.
Did you know that over-irrigation can affect your orchard’s over-all soil health? It’s extremely important to have day-to-day management of soil and irrigation to keep your crops healthy. Almond Lane monitors excessive drainage, and agricultural runoff to reduce soil erosion, and improve soil fertility. Good soil health is what gives you great, tasty almonds like ours!
