Each year, we host a Thanksgiving meal and celebration for the teens and young adults we so proudly serve. While unfortunately we cannot gather this year, we are continuing our wonderful partnership with @heirloomla to provide and deliver delicious holiday meals + gift baskets to these families. MOMS GOING BACK TO SCHOOL The pandemic continues, and its harsh impacts on our young parenting clientswho already struggle to access housing, education, healthcare and vital servicesgo on. Yet your support has helped us mobilize swiftly amidst this crisis to respond to the urgent needs of young #moms in foster care. Despite these trying months and the work that is still ahead, we are INSPIREDby the outpouring of support from our membersand BY OUR CLIENTS, who move us ...with their stories of resilience, tenacity, and fierce determination. Only 4% of #fosteryouth complete college by the age of 24,and now young moms are also struggling to manage #distancelearning for their children. But with a foundation of support,these self-empowered moms are going back to school themselves! Our clientKirstenhas a two year old son and is expecting another baby boy in December. Kirsten was 13 when she entered the foster care system. And before being moved to a new placement, she was living in an unstable home, where she was kept from enrolling in school. When the COVID-19 outbreak began, like many young people transitioning from foster care to independence, Kirsten lost her job. She suddenly faced additional financial hardship and uncertainty. But the change presented the opportunity for her to pursue the education she has always wanted. "I didn't want to go back," she says. "I wanted to go to school." This week, Kirsten started her first day of the fall semester at West Los Angeles College17 units, full time. Motivated by her son, her baby on the way, her fiancé, and her own potential to impact change, Kirsten plans to complete her general education credits so that she can transfer to a university and pursue a career in psychology."My dream is to make young foster youth feel safe, because I know how scary life can be,"she says."Everyone deserves stability." We never could have imagined the ways in which 2020 would on call us to #MotherUp. And we’re so inspired by the thousands of moms around the country who are doing just that.
