Alexandria House 25.02.2021

To wrap up our Black History Month reflections, we offer some encouraging words by board member Adrian Anderson. "Value begins within so nurturing value within allows us to see the value in others and the power of a true opportunity in one's life. Read and never stop reading about the issues. Seek solutions because the answers deserve the investment which benefits the whole. Sponsor a family in need for basic necessities so the parent(s) can focus on building forward. Support... small businesses, including minority-owned businesses in your overall spending. We have to have a "vision" even if it's idealized, it's okay because each step forward to help uplift those left limited and brings forth a more perfect union...We the People are better when it really is we the people rising together, creating a healthier society. Educate yourself in the areas that speak authentically to you. Visit and support organizations that do the day to day work. Practice Random Acts of Kindness because there is positive impact with every intentional act...the ripples touch lives." Adrian Anderson is an inspirational speaker, beauty & lifestyle entrepreneur, and former member of the Grammy nominated group Trin-i-Tee 5:7. She has been on our board since 2016. #blackhistorymonth

This week we hear from our board chair, Caroline Fitzgerald: As the writer Maya Angelou said, "Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave; I am the dream and the hope of the slaves. I rise, I rise, I rise....!" Alexandria House board and staff members were asked to participate in an anti-racism workshop sponsored by The Racial Equity Institute (REI). As a black woman who thought I knew everything about race in America, it was truly an eye-opening experience for me. "Racism is ...a fierce, ever-present challenging force which has structured the thinking, behavior, and actions of individuals and institutions since the beginning of US history." I highly recommend this workshop by REI, it will open your eyes and change your perception on racism. REI believes that once a person or organization has the training, they will begin to make necessary changes toward anti-racism. Learn more about REI at www.racialequityinstitute.com. Caroline has been with Alexandria House for 21 years, a board member for over 15 years and has served as board chair for the past 7 years. She is a therapist (specializing in hypnotherapy), a spiritual counselor, a wife, a mother of five and a grandmother of seven. Her life’s work has been about empowering women, anti-racism, and spiritual seeking. #blackhistorymonth
