Atticus Wegman secured a $775,000 settlement on the eve of arbitration for a client that injured his back in two motor vehicle crashes just two weeks apart. Atticus had the difficult task of apportioning the injuries between the crashes. This unfortunate sequence of events began when the client was a passenger in a rideshare company vehicle which was struck by another vehicle at a high rate of speed. Two weeks later, the client was involved in a lesser impactful rear end cras...h. Atticus successfully argued the first crash in the rideshare company vehicle was the predominant cause of the client’s back injuries which eventually resulted in a microdiscectomy procedure and residual pain. For more than 20 years, Wylie Aitken and his wife, Bette, have been supporting Chapman University, including Wylie serving on the Board of Trustees since 2004 and serving as Board Chair for the past four years, having fulfilled his term and completed his leadership. In honor of his exemplary service and commitment to the school, Chapman University has awarded Wylie the title of Chair Emeritus. Beyond serving on the Board, he was a key figure in supporting the founding of Chap...man University Fowler School of Law and the Wylie Aitken Trial Courtroom, which is a state-of-the-art national courtroom, oversaw the construction of the Keck Center for Science and Engineering, and led the university to accomplish countless academic achievements, including being recognized as a National University in the U.S. News and World Report. Additionally, he along with his wife, Bette, saw the philanthropic establishments of the Bette and Wylie Aitken Family Protection Clinic, the Center for Lawyering and Advocacy Skills, and the Bette and Wylie Aitken Arts Plaza at the university. Per the thoughtful letter from Chapman University President Daniele C. Struppa, the school and all members of the Chapman Family honor and celebrate the service and dedication of Wylie. Congratulations on the well-earned and deserved recognition, Wylie! The Banyard Inn of Court held its Holiday Mixer and Casey Johnson served as the host and emcee. He was joined by Wylie Aitken, who gave the keynote speech at the event. Wylie shared some humorous thoughts about the holidays and the current state of affairs and encouraged attendees to use the pandemic as an opportunity to reflect on what is important, reach out to friends and loved ones and tackle a project or pick up a new hobby. His remarks were the perfect balance of levity and inspiration - and were very well received by ugly sweater adorned attendees with creative, mostly holiday-themed virtual backgrounds!

This holiday season is unlike any other, to cap off a year unlike any other in our lifetimes. Throughout this season, and as we move into a new and hopefully better year, we wish you moments of peace and love amid the difficulties. No matter what our challenges, in most cases, there are people more in need than ourselves. It is a spiritual holiday to count our blessings. What we can do is to continue our tradition this year working with The Salvation Army USA to help the home...less in Orange County. Our help is needed this year more than ever. Please search your closets for jackets, sweaters, and scarves for adults and children. We will be collecting donations at the front steps of our Santa Ana office, 3 MacArthur Place, on Tuesday, December 15 from 1-3 PM and Thursday, December 17 from 1-3 PM or you can take them directly to The Salvation Army (818 E 3rd St, Santa Ana, CA 92701) from 3:30 PM to 7 PM Monday through Friday.
