If you have been the unfortunate victim of a break-in one of the key preventative methods one can take to ensure this never happens again is to get your locks checked. In considering your home security it is vital to take an inquisitive and habitual approach to arming and updating your security and getting your locks checked is a crucial way of determining why it happened and how it can be prevented in the future. The Smart Key uses five wafers that can be set to six positions each, giving it a total of 7,776 (65) key differs. This number is drastically reduced because of poor tolerances that accept half cuts at every position, reducing the number of real differs to 243 (35). Unlike traditional wafer locks, the Smart Key's user-rekeying ability heavily modifies the internals of the lock. Instead of the key directly interacting with the wafers, it interacts with a series of guide pins. ...The guide pins hook into the wafers at different levels (depending on the bitting of each wafer) to raise them to the proper position. Wafers provide pick resistance in the form of serrations on the side of the wafer that engages the sidebar. Because the lock is not pin-tumbler based, it is also not subject to key bumping attacks. When the user wants to rekey the lock, the working key is used to rotate the plug 90 clockwise. A special tool known as the "Smart Key" is used on the small hole to the left of the keyway. This physically disengages the sidebar and wafers from the guide pins and allows the working key to be removed. A new key can be inserted and the plug rotated back to the default position. When this is done, the sidebar and wafers slide back onto the new position of the guide pins, and rekeys the lock. In response to the heightened danger from unwanted home entry, Lok-A-Bolt introduces the Door Angel, a simple and cost effective product that increases home security and safety by stopping anyone with or without a deadbolt key from entering the residence while someone is home. The Door Angel is hung over the deadbolt knob, requiring no installation. When someone tries to turn the deadbolt from the outside, the device will push against the doorjamb or a restrictor. This preven...ts the deadbolt from turning, the slide from retracting, and the door from opening, so it is effective against both key bumping forced entry and unwanted access by those with a home key. The device is designed to fit over a deadbolt that locks in any position, including vertical, horizontal, or 45-degree angle. Unlike some more complicated devices, it requires no strength, force, or tension to work properly, and can be installed without any tools. If you are interested in the door angel, or other effective ways to secure your home, call Mark at After Hours Locksmith (858) 444-0733.

Are you and your family hitting the road for the holidays? No matter what time of year, when you leave your home the last thing you want to worry about is a burglary. After Hours Locksmith has some tips to help your belongings remain secure while you are on vacation. - Don’t leave your home in the dark or flood it day and night in lights. Invest in timers to turn on and off lights, mimicking your normal routine to make it look like someone is active in the home.... - Install motion sensor lights on the outside front and back areas of your home. Make sure to fully light all entry points. - Depending on how long and what time of year you are going to be gone; you may want to consider hiring someone to maintain your landscape. Overgrown lawns can be a calling card to cagey burglars. - Nothing says come rob me (or we are just lazy people) like an overstuffed mailbox and a pile of old newspapers. Go online to usps.gov and hold your mail delivery and ask your newspaper to pause delivery. - If your driveway will be totally bare, you may want to invite a neighbor to use it while you are gone. Having a car parked in the driveway is an effective deterrent to potential break in. - Put away any thing that is outside your home that may entice an intruder or make it easier for them to break in such as tools and ladders. And never leave a key under the mat, a burglar will know all the key hiding places. - Don’t post on Facebook or tweet to your friends that you are going away. It is always surprising how many people do. Thieves use social networks looking for those types of opportunities. - Lock up heirlooms and other valuables in a secured safe or bank safety deposit box. - Intruders are not the only culprits that can invade your home. Millions of dollars in home fire and water damage occur every year when people are away. Set your home temperature to the low 60’s and open lower sink cabinets to prevent the pipes from busting in a freeze. Unplug all unnecessary appliances such as toasters and coffee makers. - LOCK your home up tight. Make sure every window and door is securely locked. All entry locations should have deadbolt locking systems with reinforced heavy duty strike plates using long screws that penetrate into the studs. Hopefully these tips will help you be able to relax while you are away. If you have concerns about the security of your locking systems on your home, call After Hours Locksmith, your Local friendly locksmith. (858) 444-0733

If you’ve been locked out of your vehicle, you know the anxiety and stress that such an event can cause. Though your keys are peacefully laying there in safety, they taunt you by being so close, yet so inaccessible. Though we try our best, being locked out in San Diego is a possibility. Here are some tips that you should take into consideration should you be locked out of your vehicle. If you don’t feel safe in the area where you locked yourself out, call 911. Your safety sho...uld be your upmost concern and the police can be there to make sure that you’re safe. Another benefit to calling 911 is that the police officer may have tools to help unlock the door. For those of us who tend to forget or misplace valuables like our car keys, a good option is to have an extra key available. You can leave the key to a trusted and dependable person who can rescue you on short notice. Another option is to purchase a magnetic box to place in a well-hidden area somewhere in the undercarriage. When you’re locked out in San Diego, you can easily retrieve the spare and open your car door with ease. If none of those options are available, place your spare key in your wallet or purse for retrieval. The best option for getting back on the road again quickly is to call a locksmith. After Hours Locksmith have years of experience in opening locks so they’ll be able to open your vehicle’s door quickly. Along with quick service, having a locksmith with you will keep unwanted attention away from you. It may seem a little suspicious that you’re unsuccessfully trying to get into a car and a police officer may pay you a visit to make sure that you’re not attempting to steal a vehicle. Having a locksmith there will make sure that doesn’t happen. After Hours Locksmith will be able help you when you are locked out in San Diego. Our experienced locksmiths will be able to quickly reach your car to provide you with quality service. We also have many other services than getting you back on the road. Give us a call to make sure that all your locksmith needs are met.

After Hours locksmith recently teamed up with 1800unlocks, a nationwide locksmith directory. Of course, we are listed in a lot of directories, but 1-800-UNLOCKS isn't the same than the others. Whats different is that 1-800-UNLOCKS service providers are networked via the vanity toll-free number, and any caller, anywhere in the USA and Canada, that dials the trademarked, branded number, 1-800-UNLOCKS will be instantly transferred to the closest legitimate, established, pro...fessional security technician. This is a good number to store in your phone for when you are traveling and want to ensure that you will be getting the same excellent service that you have become accustomed to using After Hours Locksmith.

Recently I have had a lot of calls recently to repair/rekey/replace locks using the "smart key" technology. This specific style of lock is very good at what it is intended to do: 1) Enable the owner to rekey easily.... 2) Pevent "lock bumping" 3) Prevent lock picking However, this technology does have its flaws. 1) Forced entry is much easier (using only screwdriver and vice grips) 2) Is not easily picked, so if you do lock yourself out, most likely the lock will need to be replaced after the locksmith gains entry In summary, this is a good lock if all you are attempting to do is dissuade someone from "accidentally" entering your home, and you constantly need to rekey. However, many criminals now look for this type of lock because it is easier to bypass than a traditional lock. (the criminal doesn't care if your lock is broken) I wouldn't put it on my doors.
