KNOW YOUR HOUSING RIGHTS: WORKSHOP ON SB 91 ON FEB 10 Impacted by COVID-19? Worried about paying rent? Last week the Governor signed an extension of last year’s... eviction moratorium until the end of this June. This bill, SB 91, has many shortcomings, but many tenants will benefit from the protection of the moratorium and be able to remain in their homes for at least another five months. The Affordable Housing Network and Law Foundation of Silicon Valley are sponsoring a know your rights ZOOM workshop on SB 91 at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, February 10. The purpose will be to empower tenants with information on their rights and encourage them to organize to stop evictions altogether and secure housing as a human right. Impacted by COVID-19? Worried about paying rent? Attorneys from the Law Foundation of Silicon Valley will be available to answer general questions following the presentation. Please register at this ZOOM link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84073140600 TALLER SOBRE SB 91 SE REALIZARÁ EL 10 DE FEBRERO Afectado por COVID-19?

This is Skinny. Skinny is homeless living in an encampment just 4 blocks away from the home she was evicted from. Just one block away in another encampment ther...e is a #COVID19 outbreak. This Friday, August 14th, the courts could reopen, putting millions at risk of eviction due to the pandemic. Aspen Institute projects 4 million could be evicted by September and that homelessness could increase 20% as a result. @GavinNewsom a mask will not protect us if we don't have a home to shelter in. #StopCOVIDEvictions - pass #AB1436!

The City of San Jose & Santa Clara County are not doing enough for our unhoused neighbors. It's been two months since we started shelter in place and they conti...nue to neglect our most vulnerable community members. There are 10,000 unhoused folks in our county and the response so far has been to rent out 600 hotel rooms and provide 90 trailers ...TWO MONTHS into the pandemic. 400 of these hotel rooms are STILL empty and the trailers are barely opening up tomorrow - why are the people who are most at risk being ignored by our elected officials? Unhoused neighbors and supporting community gathered at the Fairmount Hotel earlier today to demand shelter for our most vulnerable residents. It’s been over a ...month and a half since the shelter in place order was put into place and our city & state officials continue to lag and put our neighbors in unnecessary danger. There are tens of thousands of empty hotel rooms across Silicon Valley right now and they’re leaving people outside to die. While city & state officials ignore our most vulnerable community members, the people interviewed here in this video have been out risking their health daily on the ground handing out food, water, and Covid kits to the people they know need it most. THANK YOU for your bravery and resilience during this incredibly difficult time. Affordable housing Network supported this protest. There is no excuse for leaving human beings abandoned in the streets while Silicon Valley has tens of thousands of vacant hotel rooms. 90% of the rooms in the Fairmont are vacant right now.

SPEAK OUT FOR HOTEL ROOMS FOR UNHOUSED PEOPLE DURING THE PANDEMIC ... Please join current and formerly unhoused people, advocates and volunteers in a socially distanced protest in Plaza de Cesar Chavez across from the Fairmont Hotel at 4pm on Thursday, April 30. We will also be passing out COVID-19 safety information and distribute food. We are rallying against San Jose’s and Santa Clara County’s failure to provide hotel rooms for unhoused people to stop COVID-19. Last week Gov. Newsom revealed that the state had leased over 16,000 hotel rooms to house the homeless, but that over 11,000 are still unused even though they were already paid for. On April 17, the County reported that it had 453 hotel rooms available, but had only allowed 236 homeless individuals to move in. Some of the rest have been referred to shelters that the CDC recently called coronavirus tinderboxes. But by far the vast majority 6,000-7,000 have been abandoned in the streets and encampments with inadequate food, sanitation, mental health services and medical care. Participating groups include Sunnyvale Clients Collaborative, Affordable Housing Network, and CHAM Deliverance Ministry.

Great video by No Vacancy CA. LA homeless leaders ask, is this the City of Angels or the City of Demons? Let's open up all those vacant hotel rooms now!

Many workers will not be able to pay rent on April 1, so Affordable Housing Network supports a rent strike in solidarity with all those who do not have money to pay rent. An eviction moratorium is a start, but not enough. Eviction moratoriums in our area require proof of coronavirus-related loss of income and require rapid repayment. What is needed is for public officials to announce a rent and mortgage payment freeze, and for renters to organize so that when some cannot pay, nobody pays. If enough people do not pay rent, government officials will be forced to use some of that trillion-dollar bail out to pay people's rent for the duration of the pandemic, instead of giving it to airlines, cruise ships, oil companies, and Wall Street banks.
