Surveying bluffs via drone is tricky business! Have you ever mapped bluffs? What worked for you? Due to the extreme elevation change over a very short lateral distance, these usually can’t be flown like a normal nadir, boustrophedonic mission,... and terrain awareness features in mapping softwares usually don’t cut it. Here’s how we would do it for bluffs and cliffs with an angle less than 90 degrees: Set control at the top and bottom of the bluff, then fly the mission as normal off of the top of the bluff. When done, take a few free hand oblique images of the facade that meet the following requirements: -150' away from the subject surface -Photos at a 45 degree gimbal angle -Do not capture the Horizon #aerotas #aerotaslinework #dronesurvey #uavmapping #drone #nadirimagery #nadir #drone #uav #surveying #surveylife #dronelife #civilengineering #dronestagram #bluffs #cliffs #photogrammetry #mapping #dji #phantom4 #phantom4pro #videography

The phantom 4 platform is still by far our favorite airframe for drone survey. The P4RTK has been a survey superstar this past year and DJI just announced the re release of the Phantom 4 Pro V2! The P4Pro V2 will outrank the Yuneec H520 as our current recommended best drone under $5000 for survey. What weather conditions yield the best drone data? Overcast skies, minimal wind, shot around mid day produce the most visible data possible. Overcast skies soften lighting and reduce contrast in shadowed areas. Minimal wind keeps your drone stable and saves batteries. Shooting around mid day keeps the shadows short, as opposed to long shadows you would find at sunrise or sunset.... Questions? We would love to hear from you! This beautiful (and equally complex) point cloud is definitely nice to look at, but working with it can be incredibly tedious. Millions of data points create this artistic looking mosaic, but not all of them represent a real surface point. Some may be street signs, power lines, shrubbery, or even random artifacts representing erroneous matches just to name a few. What’s your favorite step in the drone surveying process? Is it data collection? Photogrammetry processing? Drafti...ng? Let us know! If you want to spend more time in the field and less time in the office, Aerotas can definitely help! Do you know what this picture is showing? It’s an erroneous match in the point cloud created in processing. This means it has created an inaccurate common point between photos. Matches like this create noise in the data and can lead to inaccuracy in the model. But what is the cause of this error? You may be surprised to know that a lot of issues in photogrammetry processing are actually caused by poor data collection methods, and can be mitigated in the field. This particul...ar issue was caused by flying with too much overlap. When there is too much overlap, the likelihood of erroneous matches being created increases. Want to know more about troubleshooting issues in Photogrammetry? Check out the link in our bio! Having issues processing photogrammetry?
