Stem cells aging: balancing self-renewal halt with complexity Mounting evidence suggests a link between cellular senescence and human adult stem cell function upon aging. Senescence is often viewed as an intrinsic program to prevent oncogenic transformation. However, the collaborative research lead by Aelan Cell Technologies suggests that replicative senescence might be more dynamic than previously anticipated. Integrated genomic and proteomic analyses of human adult stem cel...ls revealed that subset of senescence-associated miRNAs (SA-miRNA) functionally required for establishing senescence, act to provide an intricate balance between driving and restraining cancerous events upon senescence. It is commonly believed that cancer arises as a consequence of an imbalance in cellular homeostasis. These new results shed light on the fundamental role of these SA-miRNA as functionally antagonistic regulators of gene networks, future exploration of which can help us understand the etiology underlying age-related disease and cancer. Therapeutic Frontiers: Adipose-Derived Stem Cells in Clinical Dermatology Applications
We are very excited to announce today the appointment of Michael D. Rosenblum, M.D., Ph.D. to our Scientific Advisory Board. A formally trained immunologist and board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Rosenblum sees patients, conducts research, and is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Welcome on board Dr. Rosenblum!
Happy #MLK Day from our team to yours. Have a safe holiday everyone.
We are very happy to announce today the appointment of King Jordan, Ph.D. to our Scientific Advisory Board. Dr. Jordan is an Associate Professor in the School of Biology and Director of the Bioinformatics Graduate Program at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Jordan combines academic expertise in biology and genetics with 20 years of experience in bioinformatics. His work entails the development and application of computational tools for the analysis of genome sequences, along with various 'omics' functional analyses, and he has published more than 100 papers in scientific journals.
We are incredibly excited to announce today the appointment of Kathryn N. Ivey, Ph.D. to our Scientific Advisory Board. Dr. Ivey is the Director of the Gladstone Stem Cell Core at the Gladstone Institutes and manages BioFulcrum, an enterprise within the Gladstone Institutes aimed at accelerating the timeline for finding cures to currently untreatable diseases by partnering with scientists, non-profits and industries. Dr. Ivey has spent the last 15 years studying cardiac cell... fate and behavior. She has conducted research using both animal and cellular models to interrogate molecular networks that control processes during heart development and whose disruption can cause cardiac disease. Currently, her research involves using induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to model cardiac and skeletal muscle development and disease to attempt to reveal cellular and molecular processes that go wrong, leading to various pathological diseases. Our team is honored to welcome Dr. Marek Dobke to the Aelan Scientific Advisory Board. Dr. Dobke is currently the Head of the Division of Plastic Surgery at the University of California - San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine and a Professor of Surgery. Dr. Dobke is an internationally renowned plastic surgeon who has special interest and clinical expertise in the use of autologous stem cells from adipose tissue in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery as well as skin rejuvenation. He is an expert in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery and has pioneered an impressive spectrum of innovative techniques in wound healing.
We are very happy to announce today the appointment of Mary Lopez, Ph.D. to our Scientific Advisory Board. Dr. Lopez will serve as an advisor to Aelan's Molecular Diagnostics Division, which is developing unique diagnostic tools that are able to provide rapid and affordable assessment of organismal vitality in blood samples. In the future, these diagnostic tools could be used by clinicians to predict the future onset of age-related diseases and make informed patient care decisions. These tools can also be used as companion diagnostics that provide essential information for the safe and effective use of a corresponding therapeutic, which is a critical component of a clinical trial in the era of precision medicine.
A #TBT #ThrowbackThursday to when a team of researchers at Georgia Institute of Technology and Aelan Cell Technologies identified regulatory elements that allow for the creation of a diverse range of different cell types from different genetic information. The study was later published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
