With the surge in students’ screen time due to distance learning, families need strategies to reduce the impact of potentially adverse effects related to visual strain and body posture. We’ve summarized some effective strategies we hope families will consider: 1. Balance Approach. The Washington Post recommended taking intentional breaks when calculating how much a kid’s average screen time is daily. Balance increased screen time with a walk or hike, so long as you maintain... the six feet apart rule and if you aren’t being quarantined. (Washington Post, 2020). 2. 20-20-20 Rule. This rule is meant to help reset and relax your eyes when using a screen and comes with two recommendations. Visual specialists first recommend that for every 20 minutes, look away from the screen and focus for 20 seconds on something that is at least 20 feet away. (The Recorder, 2020). The next recommendation is for every three consecutive hours, stop screen use and spend at least 30 minutes doing something completely different. (The Recorder, 2020). 3. Active Chair. Sitting straight will always be the first tip for adjusting one’s body posture, but this will be a challenge for many to mindfully maintain on a constant basis. This tip will allow you to multitask while working on your body posture. 4. Keep Moving. This can range from rocking back and forth while sitting down to having a yoga session before and after learning lessons to loosen your body. Yoga helps the body regain and retain an upright posture from the back way up to the shoulders which is very crucial and important for a person practicing eLearning. (E-learning Industry, 2015). 5. Get Some Sleep. Finally, turn off those devices! Studies have shown that, exposure to light in the evening, especially blue light from our computer screens may suppress nocturnal melatonin secretion and alter circadian rhythms. (John Hopkins News-Letter, 2020). This can lead to irregular sleep patterns, which in turn can affect your capacity to learn. We hope these tips will help your student when dealing with potential challenges that can come with extended periods of screen time use during online learning. Need more advice or have questions?
