It's not too late to get involved with CPP's Common Read! The Moth Presents: Occasional Magic is this year's Common Read book. Inside you'll discover true 'moth...' stories about finding strength to face the impossible. There are a couple of ways to get involved: 1 Listen to the stories in the book! Visit https://www.cpp.edu/studentsucce//common-read-events.shtml for a curated list of links to the Moth website. 2 Submit to our essay contest! Write your own Moth story, a true personal story about finding the courage to face the impossible and make your world better. Find the prompt and submit by November 6 at https://www.cpp.edu/studentsucce//common-read-events.shtml. 3 Participate in the Learn Through Discovery Challenge with CPP A.I.! With a team, identify a social justice issue from the book and develop a creative and innovative solution that addresses the issue that can be implemented or launched. Find the prompt and submit by November 6 at https://www.cpp.edu/studentsucce//common-read-events.shtml. 4 Share your Moth story! The current social context of a global pandemic and the continued fight against racial injustices challenges us to recognize the "Occasional Magic" of this moment. Think about the most important and impactful moments during your time at CPP, and tell your Moth story using the free platform Microsoft Sway. Swipe through for more details and check https://www.cpp.edu/studentsucce//common-read-events.shtml to get started. DM us if you have any questions! #CalPolyPomona

Introducing Season 2 of our LTD podcast "Uncharted Horizons!" This season will explore innovation across the Cal Poly Pomona, featuring a diverse set of guests from across campus. Episode 1 features Dr. Kate Ozment, Assistant Professor in the English and Modern Languages Department in the Cal Poly Pomona-College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences. Dr. Ozment works on women’s writing and text technologies, focusing on how re-creating historical printing practices helps us learn more about the interplay of manuscript, print, and digital technologies in our modern world. Her research is currently investigating how women book collectors have shaped the study of material artifacts in the United States in the mid-twentieth century. Listen now: bit.ly/UnchartedHorizons2

The National Science Foundation (NSF) I-Corps program just completed the Fall 2020 short course on Friday, 10/9 and 10/23. The 2-day course covered how to take an idea, product, technology, and/or research and translate it into the marketplace. 6 teams for a total of 13 participants of faculty and students made up Cohort 5, led by an 8 person teaching team. Project Spotlight: Orangeosity Orange pomace (byproduct of orange juice production, typically thrown away or used in... livestock feed) is full of antioxidants, but it is too bitter for people to incorporate into their diets. Orangeosity plans to develop ways to reduce the bitterness of orange pomace and incorporate it into foods, reducing waste along the way. Highlight 1 Isabel Gutierrez from Cohort 2 spoke about her company, Vistendo, and offered advice to Cohort 5. She said it has been a difficultyet very rewardingexperience to combine her interests in engineering and medicine to create an app that can help detect athletes’ injuries on the field. https://vistendo.com Highlight 2 Returning team HyStack also offered advice and words of encouragement. They said that it took them a couple of tries for them to understand the I-Corps lessons, so they encouraged this current cohort not to give up hope if they didn’t yet understand everything. Now that the lessons have clicked for them, they feel confident in their technology and the improvements they made along the way. #NSFStories We hope you all will join Cohort 6 this upcoming Spring 2021. Details coming soon. Learn more about I-Corps in the meantime: www.cpp.edu/i-corps
