From The Solano County Sheriff's Office: "In 1919, Georgia Ann Robinson became one of the first two African American women to become police officers in the United States. Before becoming a Los Angeles police officer, Robinson had been working as a Suffragette and was active with various community organizations. In 1916, when the LAPD faced a staff shortage due to men enlisting to fight in World War I, Robinson joined as a volunteer. In 1919, she became a full-time officer. Whenever possible, she referred young African American women to social agencies rather than jailing them, often bringing them home with her when they had nowhere else to go. We want to recognize Officer Robinson’s sacrifice and leadership. Her work inspires us all." #BlackHistoryMonth

Did you know that according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, one-third of women plan to increase investments in their business, compared to 39 percent of men? That’s noble, but exceedingly difficult, as women-owned and women-led businesses in Vacaville are struggling now more than ever. Want to support them? Nominate a special woman, or self-nominate. Here’s how: To nominate someone, visit https://www.vacavillesoroptimist.org/nominate.html. To self-nominate, click https://www.vacavillesoroptimist.org/self-nominate.html

Good news, Solano! Because of our large testing numbers (higher than state average), our case rate has been lowered to red tier level this week, according to the State. This means that our businesses' indoor operations can continue for now under red tier guidance. We would only revert back to the more restrictive purple tier if our case rate (or other metrics) increases to purple tier level for two consecutive weeks. We're staying in the red tier this week - let's keep up the good work! Let’s continue to #KeepSolanoOpen and keep our case rate down: wear a mask, maintain 6ft distance as much as possible, and if you think you were exposed to someone with COVID-19, get tested. Together, we can slow the spread of COVID-19 in our community. For more info on the data, visit covid19.ca.gov/safer-economy
Matthew Keyes at Solano News Update reports the following: "Based on the volume of ballots processed and counted as of Wednesday evening, Solano News Update made the following projections for certain local and county races: Rep. John Garamendi, Asm. Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, Sen. Bill Dodd and Asm. Jim Frazier all retained their respective legislative seats, defeating local challengers.... In Vacaville, a hotly-contested race for a city council seat in District 3 went to Michael Silva, who beat challenger Amber Robitaille. The news is an upset for local public safety agencies, including the town’s police and firefighters union who backed Robitaille in the race. Also in Vacaville, Roy Stockton clinched a city council spot in District 1. Voters in Fairfield and Vacaville approved a marijuana business tax. Voters in Suisun City approved Measure Q, an initiative that limits the mayor and members of the city council to four terms. In neighboring Winters, voters overwhelmingly approved Measure A, a growth boundary initiative that limits development within the city and subjects development directly outside the city’s limit to additional levels of scrutiny. In Dixon, voters approved a measure that repeals water rate changes established early last year. Some other closely-watched races, including mayoral races in Vallejo and Dixon, were still too close to project a winner as of 6 p.m. Wednesday. Mail-in and provisional ballots that are still being processed and counted will likely determine the winner of those close contests." (Graphic by Solano News Update)
Hi KUIC's Ron Brown here. Every morning I wake up at 12:30 to prepare for the KUIC Hometown Morning Show. John Young and I start at 5:30. I do a variety of duties from home including news gathering, show prep and social media posts. But I'm not alone. My two adorable pups Hana and Kona sit on the couch next to me every single morning. Five years ago, my wife and I were blessed with adopting them from the Solano County Animal Shelter in Fairfield. We love them so much. We are so grateful to have them. They bring us so much love, joy and happiness.
