But not all children have access to nutritious meals. Together, we can do something about it this Giving Tuesday. We all share in the benefits that come from consistent, nutritious food prepared with love. 5 Loaves programs are charitably funded, meaning the feeding programs are not funded by government dollars. Every healthy meal for the children is funded by YOU, 5 Loaves generous supporters, and community. The History Some of you may or may not know that I am a part of 5 Loaves. I traveled to Haiti in 1999 as part of a construction team. Nothing could have prepared me for what I witnessed on the ground while in-country. Children were going without basic needs- food, water, clothing, among other things. Also, children weren't going to school and were being forced to the streets to beg for their next meal. For the next few years, I returned to Haiti and also visited the Philippines where he witnessed the same thing. Using my connections that I have made in the business world, as well as connections I made within the church and abroad, I set out in 2005 to establish a non-profit that focused on providing for the needs of children, regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, or gender. I asked God a simple question- "What can I do?" 5 Loaves was God's answer. 5 Loaves quickly became a non-profit 501 (c) (3) in 2006. 5 Loaves partners with orphanages, schools and other Non-Government Organizations (NGOs). We are having a positive social and economic impact on local communities by not only providing meals, but also providing employment for cooks, teachers, kitchen helpers, drivers, and regional food vendors. Currently, 5 Loaves is established in Haiti, Philippines, and Albanianinto the rest of the world, and we are excited to continue our existing partnerships and, as always, to look for new opportunities throughout the developing nations of the world! The Need Hunger is a term which has three meanings (Oxford English Dictionary 1971) the uneasy or painful sensation caused by want of food; craving appetite. Also the exhausted condition caused by want of food the want or scarcity of food in a country a strong desire or craving Children are the most visible victims of undernutrition. Estimate that undernutrition in the aggregateincluding fetal growth restriction, stunting, wasting, and deficiencies of vitamin A and zinc along with sub-optimum breastfeedingis a cause of 31 million child deaths annually or 45% of all child deaths. Undernutrition magnifies the effect of every disease, including measles and malaria. The estimated proportions of deaths in which undernutrition is an underlying cause are roughly similar for diarrhea (61%), malaria (57%), pneumonia (52%), and measles (45%). Malnutrition can also be caused by diseases, such as the diseases that cause diarrhea, by reducing the body’s ability to convert food into usable nutrients. Hunger is also a cause of poverty, and thus of hunger. By causing poor health, small body size, low levels of energy, and reductions in mental functioning, hunger can lead to even greater poverty by reducing people’s ability to work and learn, thus leading to even greater hunger. The Impact We know when children have consistent access to healthy, nourishing food truancy goes down in schools, they see fewer behavioral problems in the classroom, children are sick less often & overall have higher academic achievement. 5 Loaves partners with The Kenedi Foundation feeding Children in Albania. Albania suffers a high poverty rate. A large proportion of the poor people living in this European country are Roma. The Kenedi Foundation tries to take care of the Roma children in Korçë. How they look after them, you can see in their documentary.
