Can outdoor spaces, city parks and open spaces be used to help schools reopen safely? Friend of the Firm Sharon Danks (Green Schoolyards America) and Craig Strang (Lawrence Hall of Science) were interview on PBS last week about about the National COVID-19 Outdoor Learning Initiative. Along with partners at Ten Strands, San Mateo County Office of Education, and colleagues across the country (including 450 Architects!) the initiative is advocating to re-purpose outdoor spaces ...in cost-effective ways to reduce the burden on indoor classrooms while providing fresh air, hands-on learning opportunities, and the health benefits associated with increased access to nature. Our employees, consultants, clients, friends, and family are always our highest priority and we are being proactive to do our part to keep everyone safe and healthy. We are adapting our workflow to continue our focus on designing healthy and sustainable communities. These are the actions we are taking: Beginning on Monday, March 16th all 450 employees have been working remotely and will until at least April 7th, per San Francisco shelter-in-place requirements. All in-person meetings at our office will be changed to conference calls and video conferencing. We will work with all clients and project teams to set this up. We are closely monitoring the recommendations of the CDC, Federal, State and Local Agencies to doing our utmost to keep everyone safe. The SF Building and Planning Departments are also shut down per the shelter-in-place order. We will monitor their status and update clients as we receive news.
