It's funny (not funny?) because it's true... Stop chasing symptoms! I can not tell you how many patients come in with a long list of medications... this is why I chose to become a TEAM physician and have been practicing Functional Medicine as well... Key Aspects of Functional Medicine:... 1. Functional medicine is investigative: Functional medicine treats symptoms by finding and addressing the root causes of the problem. This approach leads to more profound and longer-lasting results. 2. Functional medicine is more holistic: Functional medicine treats the body as an interconnected whole, and practitioners recognize that in order to treat one part, all other parts must be addressed. Functional medicine is generally saferand treatments in functional medicine typically have fewer side effects, risks, or complications. Practitioners emphasize diet, lifestyle, supplements, and herbs, and seemingly unrelated conditions often will improve or resolve spontaneously in treatment. 3. Functional medicine is patient-centered vs. disease centered: This means that practitioners treat the patient and not the disease. We recognize the individuality of the patient, and we know that there is no one-size-fits-all approach. In fact, patients with the same condition, for example, ulcerative colitis, may get a completely different treatment based on the particular root cause, origin, or triggers of their condition. 4. Functional medicine is integrative: Functional medicine combines the best of allopathic and alternative treatments. It doesn’t exclude drugs and surgery when they’re necessary, but it does tend to focus more on diet, lifestyle, supplements, and herbs as the primary interventions. 5. Functional medicine is preventative: Functional medicine is guided by the ancient Chinese proverb, The superb physician treats disease before it occurs. Hashimoto’s: - an autoimmune disease that is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the US - You can have Hashimoto’s but NOT be hypothyroid it depends on how much your immune system is attacking the associated antibodies and the damage that has been done. - You can go into remission, but once your bady make and antibody, it always knows how. This is why it is important to remove the triggers of inflammation to help prevent an autoimmune flare-up/relapse... - most common in middle aged women, but can effect anyone - diagnosis is determined by: hypothyroid symptoms, low T4 (thyroid hormone), high TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone), and the presence of TPO antibodies (Thyroid Peroxidase an enzyme critical for thyroid function and some other things too). Common Symptoms: *not everyone has the same symptoms, and not all symptoms will present in every person - fatigue - goiter weight gain - constipation - feeling cold (especially in hands and feet)/sensitivity to cold - dry skin - depression - muscle aches and poor tolerance to exercise or physical activity - irregular or heavy menses Treatment: - typically can include T4 (levothyroxine) or glandular thyroid supplement such as Armor - sometimes T3 (the active form of thyroid hormone) Other ideas for keeping Hashimoto’s in remission not often discussed by your medical doctor: - nutritional plan for autoimmunity and thyroid health - supplements to maximize thyroid function and thyroid hormone regulation It can take years to get diagnosed with autoimmunity - it can be different in every individual. Individualized medicine is the best approach. Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food. - Hippocrates I cannot overstate this - how we eat determines how healthy we will be. Whether or not we are ill, injured, or well. If we eat poorly for our needs, we will not achieve our optimal health. There is no one size fits all "diet." While there are definitely some general nutritional needs that apply to most of us, what works for me might not be best for you. If one is sick or injured, we may need to look at a nutri...tional plan specifically designed to maximize your healing potential... We can take steps to live our best lives... #FunctionalMedicine, #acupuncture, TCM, & good nutrition can help! https://3pacupuncture.com/testimonials/ #sandiego #menopause #menieres #migraines #chronicmigraine #bellspalsy #autoimmune #autoimmunedisease #chronicfatigue #invisibleillness #chronicpain #fibromyalgia #MECFS #chronicfatiguesyndrome #sjogrens #IBD #IBS #hashimotos #RA #rheumatoidarthritis #Lupus #MS #multiplesclerosis #MCAS #MCAD #Parkinsons #Alzheimers #spoonie

What is Functional Medicine? Functional Medicine identifies and addresses the root causes of disease to promote long-term wellness, rather than simply alleviating symptoms. Your diagnosis and treatment plan are completed using a systems based approach that works to integrate and restore the natural, healthy function of all of your body's systems. Evaluation and diagnosis are based on lab evaluations that may include blood chemistry, urinalysis, hormone and endocrine systems, ...Continue reading

First pain-free day in almost three years! I have had acute pain left side back down to knee and ankle. I have been unable to walk properly or sleep on my side for past three months. Even with weekly physio visits. Just one 40 minute treatment from Doc Pete I had the best sleep last night still pain free today! After 35 years as a police officer & dog handler I have had many injuries. Today is the first pain free day since retiring 7/17/2013. Electroacupuncture (EA) may reduce inflammatory injury by inhibiting nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-B) signaling pathway activation after ischemic stroke... upregulating neuronal CYLD expression by EA may prevent NF-B nuclear translocation and decrease neuronal CX3CL1 expression, inducing subsequent inhibition of microglial activation and pro-inflammatory cytokines in peri-ischemic areas. MOAs evaluated in the study: - ...EA caused a substantial drop in CYLD protein at 6 h r...eperfusion - EA inhibited the p38 MAPK signaling pathway in the hippocampus of rats with cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury - EA increased the number of neuronal CYLD-positive cells in the ischemic cortical border region at 24 h reperfusion. - EA inhibited degradation of IB and NF-B nuclear translocation by increasing CYLD. CYLD and NF-B p65 were co-expressed in cortical neurons of the peri-ischemic area and more CYLD positive cells were observed there, but NF-B p65 was primarily maintained in the cytoplasm after EA treatment during the acute stage of ischemia/reperfusion - CYLD inhibited the NF-B signaling pathway... Food is the best medicine! Most of us don’t need some highly specialized nutritional plan. Most of us don’t want or need to have a huge workout routine with multiple daily workouts or expensive gym memberships. Most of us should not have to take prescriptions to treat symptoms of conditions that result from a lack of basic nutrition or a sedentary lifestyle. I HATE the gym. For most of my patients, when I recommend they get active, I don’t really care if they walk, h...ike, run, lift weights, bowl, play a sport, or whatever. They could go to the gym a few days a week if that’s what they enjoy. I want them to find a physical activity and enjoy it regularly throughout the week. It is good physically, but also mentally and emotionally. If you don’t enjoy an activity, you are significantly less likely to continue doing it. I don’t typically recommend crazy nutritional guidelines for most patients unless there is a serious underlying condition or they have a personal goal that requires it. For most of us if we eat a nice blend of veggies, whole grains (without much wheat), and proteins, we can have good health. If I do recommend a nutritional plan more involved, it s more than likely for 30-90 days before returning to a simpler approach. Again this is unless there is an underlying metabolic or medical condition that requires a different intervention. For most of us, simply eating well and being active is an easy undertaking and can keep us off the pills... Eating quality food and being active can keep most of us healthy... What is #MS? - an autoimmune condition effecting the CNS and PNS. The immune system attacks the myelin sheath, an important sheath surrounding nerves/neurons that both protects the nerve and functions in nervous system communication. - triggers/causes may include immune system imbalances/inflammation, environmental toxins/stressors, infections may trigger MS, trauma, and there is some evidence of genetic correlation to susceptibility but MS is not an inherited genetic conditi...on. Two Stages of MS: 1) inflammation allows immune components to penetrate the blood brain barrier through a complex series of actions 2) degeneration of the myelin occurs as the immune system attacks the myelin sheath Types of MS: 1) Relapsing-Remitting MS (RRMS). - most common - characterized by periods of relapse (symptoms apparent) and remission (no/reduced symptoms) - damage to the myelin can occur during relapse of symptoms and the condition can progress 2) Secondary-Progressive MS (SPMS). - symptoms worsen more steadily over time - may include periods of relapse/remission - prior to more recent treatment developments/improvements, about half of those with RRMS progressed to this category within 10 years - still not much data on the effect of early treatment preventing the progression of RRMS to this category 3) Primary-Progressive MS (PPMS) - not common - slow worsening of symptoms from onset with NO relapse/remission 4) Progressive-Relapsing MS (PRMS) - rare - steady worsening of symptoms/degeneration with periods of acute relapse but no periods of remission or recovery It can take years to get diagnosed with autoimmunity - it can be different in every individual.
