The actions of the Minneapolis police officers involved in the murder of George Floyd, especially the officer arrested for 3rd Degree Murder, should not be tolerated by our society. We, especially Mr. Floyd’s surviving family, should expect that the officer(s) are prosecuted to the fullest extent allowable under applicable law. We in law enforcement should not accept that we have bad apples, who commit unforgivable acts. We should remove them from our ranks as they destroy... the image of service that we protect with our lives. We are peace officers sworn to protect the public who rely upon us to feel safe and to protect them from harm. The murder of George Floyd on May 25, 2020 is not a community policing issue. It is not an issue of procedural justice or lack thereof. It is not prevented by a higher commitment to 21st Century Policing. Murder is a criminal act! As communities of all colors continue to express their anger, let us all commit to peaceful resolve. This will take time, action, extreme patience and a vision for a better day ahead. Terry McManus Chief of Police Capitola Police Department
