The storm has passed and this beautiful Hermit Thrush just came out and felt like singing! Be safe everyone, and head on over to the Nature Center to check out all the wonderful Bird Houses! Sale today starting at 10:00 am!
"Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" that is a mantra at the BVAS Nature Center and this birdhouse definitely captures it’s spirit. Using an old license plate, a used spool of thread, a teaspoon, and more, this anonymous artist created a one-of-a-kind bird house. And though rain may come on Saturday, we plan to still hold the sale! Stop by and purchase one of these unique works of art.
Here is a short movie with some images and a few video clips from the feast the Buena Vista Lagoon has been for so many beautiful wetland birds. Most of the pelicans in this video are young Brown Pelicans. The adults have white heads and immatures have the lovely soft brown-gray tones on their heads and necks. Please consider subscribing to our new YouTube Channel! It's free and we will not have google advertising, just uninterrupted videos for your enjoyment. Together we can learn about the birds that are local to San Diego County. Birds in this video include, Brown Pelican, American Coot, Eared Grebe, Northern Pintail, Double-crested Cormorant, and Great Egret. Here is a link to our YouTube Channel https://youtu.be/KayhplJQKn4
It isn't too often that you can get to see these spectacular birds up-close. And what a sight it has been here at Buena Vista Lagoon due to the availability of easy-to-catch fish. Nature rarely wastes resources, and the birds are feasting while they can. Photos: Jane Mygatt Bird IDs will be in individual images. 1 Nov 2020

Happy Halloween from BVAS! Crafted by Allan Price, this snowy owl wood inlay patiently waits on a branch in a wooded forest for supper. And for you to purchase it Nov 7th!
We hope everyone has a safe and Happy Halloween!
Haven't been to the beach in a while, but here are some photos and clips of some of the birds seen along the coast from Cardiff, Swami's, and down to Moonlight beach. No specific dates, just some miscellaneous footage. It's time to check out the low tide charts and see what is there! Video: Jane Mygatt
Another birdhouse coming your way! Remember seeing this beautiful ficus tree birdhouse made by Oceanside local, Paul Brown when we hoped to hold our auction in March? It and several other natural wood bird houses, along with so many nature art pieces, will be available for sale on Nov 7th. Stop by the Nature Center from 10-2, for our outdoor shopping fundraiser.
This gorgeous batik collage was created by Bruce and Patty Montgomery and will be available on Nov 7th at our outdoor sale. Be sure to stop by between 10 and 2 and do some shopping! This unique art piece brings to life these whimsical waterfowl enjoying themselves in a wetland, hidden among the sedges and reeds, and is waiting to be enjoyed in someone’s home.
Buena Vista Audubon now has a YouTube channel. Our videos are organized under four playlists and should be easy to find. This Red-shouldered Hawk was at the Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park trail in Carlsbad. I don't know if it is possible to see, but looks like the underside of a snake near its feet. These raptors eat a variety of prey, including rabbits and other small mammals, frogs, and lizards, in addition to snakes. It swooped low and landed in a nearby pepper tree. Such a nice surprise to get a pretty good (zoomed-in) view. Photo: Jane Mygatt, 21 Oct 2020
