Happy National First Responders Day! We are thankful for all of our fellow first responders and feel honored to serve alongside them. #NationalFirstRespondersDay : SLV Steve
Power outages may occur before and during the threat of a wildfire. It’s important to be prepared and know what actions to take when leaving your home. Along with the pre-evacuation preparation steps, these are a few ways to be ready in case of a power outage during these critical times. https://www.readyforwildfire.org//power-outage-information/
Emergency Supply Kits Put together your emergency supply kit long before a wildfire or other disaster occurs and keep it easily accessible so you can take it with you when you have to evacuate. Plan to be away from your home for an extended period of time. Each person should have a readily accessible emergency supply kit. Backpacks work great for storing these items (except food and water) and are quick to grab. Storing food and water in a tub or chest on wheels will make it easier to transport. Keep it light enough to be able to lift it into your car. Ensure you plan with COVID-19 in mind.
Evacuation plans for families with young children should include helping toddlers understand how to quickly respond in case of fire, and how adults can escape with babies. It is important to talk to toddlers and small children at a level that they understand and that does not frighten. Seniors and people with disabilities also need special consideration when preparing for a disaster. Check out the form below to fill out with your loved ones.

CREATE A WILDFIRE ACTION PLAN Your Wildfire Action Plan must be prepared, and familiar to all members of your household well in advance of a wildfire. Use the checklist below to help create your plan. Each family’s plan will be different, depending on a variety of issues, needs, and situations. Ensure you plan with COVID-19 in mind. Ask friends or relatives outside your area if you would be able to stay with them, should the need arise. If you do need to evacuate and plan to stay with friends or relatives, ask first if they have symptoms of COVID-19 or have people in their home at higher risk for serious illness. If that is the case, make other arrangements. Check with hotels, motels and campgrounds to learn if they are open.

How can I prepare my home? Prepare your home with fire-ignition-resistant materials before fire strikes: Flying embers from a wildfire can destroy homes up to a mile away. Taking the necessary measures to harden (prepare) your home can help increase its chance of survival when wildfire strikes. Check out this list of low cost and no cost ways to prepare your home: http://www.readyforwildfire.org//Low-cost-Retrofit-List-Fi
The most important person in protecting homes from wildfire is not a firefighter, but the property owner. It is the action taken by the owner before the wildfire occurs that is most critical. Defensible space is essential to improve your home’s chance of surviving a wildfire. It’s the buffer you create between a building on your property and the grass, trees, shrubs, or any wildland area that surround it. This space is needed to slow or stop the spread of wildfire and it helps protect your home from catching fireeither from direct flame contact or radiant heat. Defensible space is also important for the protection of firefighters defending your home. For more information on defensible space zones, plant and tree spacing, and fire resistant landscaping visit: https://www.readyforwildfire.org//get-re/defensible-space/
