123 Farm Camp 03.11.2020

Today the older group visited the sheep pen and fed the animals. The younger group did a seeding activity. Both groups visited our chickens and harvested heirloom chicken eggs to be used in the mint ice cream class in the afternoon. We rounded up the day with a farm-themed scavenger hunt. Each group had to work as a team finding clues by solving riddles and looking at the map. Tomorrow is water day so please bring a change of clothes and a towel.

Hello and welcome to Week 3 of Farm Camp! The campers started the day by visiting our herd of organic sheep and feeding them olive leaves. They learned about wool processing and made a craft too. The kids also helped fed our worms and learned about vermiculture.

The kids ended farm camp with a farm to table cooking class and a group photo. We had a lot of fun with your kids this week and wish them a great summer! The photo magazines take about 5-6 weeks to design and print. Once they are ready we will contact you via e-mail. Thank you!

The campers learned about lavender today. They hung lavender bundles to dry, shook lavender to make culinary lavender buds and the older kids made their own lavender sleep spray while the younger kids made lavender slime. The kids finished off decorating their cards made with dried flowers from our farm. The day ended with water games. Tomorrow is the farm to table luncheon. We hope to see all the parents at 11 am for the farm tour (if you can't make it for the tour, please join us for lunch at 12 pm).

The young farmers visited our beehives up close and saw the bees storing honey in honeycombs. They learned the importance of bees. The kids also visited our edible flower garden and harvested flowers for the cooking class (sugar cookies pressed with flowers). They also made a craft using the flowers.

Welcome to the first day of Farm Camp! The young farmers harvested olive branches to feed our flock of organic sheep. They then learned about processing wool and made a craft using yarn. They worked hard shoveling and mixing the organic compost and fed worms from our vermiculture bin. The day ended with ice breaker games.

For the finale, the kids chopped and prepared their vegetables for a cauliflower pizza. They took a group photo as well as individual portraits (normal and funny face). Thank you to all parents for joining us today. We had a lot of fun on the farm this week.

The kids started the day off today learning about compost tea and the microbiology of soil. They also had a chance to meet our bees in the 3 acre field! After lunch, the older kids learned about the benefits of aromatherapy and made their own blend of lavender spray using essential oil and water distilled from the farm. The younger kids made a relaxing lavender slime using the lavender essential oil and lavender buds they learned about the day before. They ended the day with water games to cool them down from the 100 degree weather!

The older kids started the day by visiting the sheep in the pen (the younger group will visit the sheep tomorrow!). The kids also harvested eggs from our heirloom chickens and some were brave enough to catch and hold the chickens. Due to the ongoing Newcastle Disease issue in Southern California, we are not able to have baby chicks this summer. The kids had two cooking classes today: an egg tart using the eggs harvested and a mint ice cream class made with the mint that was harvested. The day ended with a farm-themed scavenger hunt. Tomorrow (Thursday) will be our water day so please come dressed to get wet (and sorry for the e-mail confusion).

Today the kids harvested flowers from our edible flower fields and made flower pressed cookies. They also made a craft using the flowers. Due to a last minute family emergency from our beekeeper, our beekeeping class has been moved to Thursday instead. Also since the sheep were a little shy on Monday we will be making another trip to the sheep pen - one group tomorrow and the other group on Thursday. Tomorrow we will also visit the chickens and play water games in the afternoon.

Our campers started off the day greeting our herd of sheep with a healthy hand harvested olive branch snack. They also had a chance to meet our worms in the compost bins and learned about the benefits of composting. After lunch, the campers were shown the process of making yarn; beginning with the shearing and even made sheep pom pom key chains.
