100th Monkey Community Cafe: Where Everyone Has a Place at the Table

Monkey Friends! Today, The Lantern -- Chico's new Vietnamese restaurant opened here in our space at 5th & Ivy St. I am subletting to Chef Quyen Nguyen and we are sharing this sweet space. The food is amazing and Quyen and her family so warm-hearted and lovely. She came from Danang to Berkeley when she was 18, and today, she realizes another dream of hers - to open a restaurant. The Lantern Hours: Tuesday-Thursday, 4 p.m.-9/10 p.m.; Friday/Saturday, 11 a.m.- 10 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Come on by for great Pho Noodle Soup, Spring Rolls, and much more!

Our Pay-What-You-Can Café has posted its 2nd Indiegogo Crowdfunding campaign! We raised $1250 in August when this was just an idea not yet in form. Now we have a vibrant café which we need everyone's help in sustaining in its first year. We opened with $10,000 and have a goal of raising an additional $20,000. This will help us pay our Executive Director/Manager -- Jill Lacefield -- who planted the see for this community café, help us purchase much needed equipment such as a Robocoup Food Processor and a single commercial fridge -- and provide for us the peace of mind that in this first year, we have a foundation under us to help sustain this remarkable and successful "Experiment in Generosity." Hey Good People of Chico! The month of December, our wonderful new café will be hosting a MATCH CHALLENGE! An anonymous donor will match all dollars donated above the "suggested donation" for our Large and Medium Plates. If you donate 50-cents or a dollar or $2 over the suggested donation, this extra donation will be doubled. Is this cool or what? Recently a woman came in very excited about what we're doing She donated $89 for the Large Plate (suggested donation of $9) ... Our "Experiment in Generosity" is such a beautiful demonstration of the human heart's joy in giving. AND after one-month open we have 17 volunteers of all ages and backgrounds operating the café during weekly shifts and we have many more waiting to come and serve.
