In sparring matches - or even a confrontation out in public - most of the time you KNOW it's coming. You see and detect the threat (or agree to the sparring match) and you can be PROACTIVE. In a self defense situation, it's REACTIVE. You didn't see or know it was coming. You're caught in whatever position you're in and you have to react from there....
