Bald eagles are one of our greatest conservation success stories! Forty years ago the Bald Eagle became an emblem of the environmental movement as their numbers plummeted from the effects of the pesticide DDT. At the low, there were only an estimated 417 breeding pairs left in the lower 48 states. However, with the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and the 1973 passage of the Endangered Species Act and subsequent banning of DDT, eagle populations began to reboun...d quickly. Recovery was made possible through captive-breeding programs, reintroduction efforts, vigorous law enforcement and habitat protectionincluding the designation of national wildlife refuges and the protection of nest sites during the breeding season. Our ambassadors help us tell the story of the Bald Eagles in order to broaden public knowledge of our environment and the wildlife that we share it with. #ConservationAmbassadors #zootoyou

First day of October, AND International Raccoon Day!? Pumpkin enrichment for the boys was the PERFECT way to celebrate! Providing safe and engaging enrichment, such as a whole pumpkin to our raccoons (and many other animals), is an amazing way to stimulate their natural foraging behaviors. Much like unwrapping gifts on our birthday, animals have a great time digging into new items to see what tasty treats or fun toys our hard-working volunteers may have filled them with! #ConservationAmbassadors #ZooToYou #Raccoons #Pumpkins

Birds of Prey (aka BOPs) rely heavily on their excellent eyesight to spot small animals from above. This means loss of vision in even one eye can be detrimental to the survival of a bald eagle. Severe injuries are just one of the many reasons that can lead to a permanent stay at a rescue facility like ours. And, while grateful there continues to be situations of rehabilitation and release, we’re eternally honored to be able to fulfill our mission; Providing injured wild animals second chance at life. #ConservationAmbassadors #ZooToYou #BaldEagle #WildlifeRescue

Watch out Winnie the Pooh, Smeagol is the new Honey Bear in town Kinkajous earned the nickname 'Honey Bear' by raiding bee hives for honey while they cruise the canopies of Central and South America. They've got a sweet tooth that extends to nectar and fruits (Smeagol's favorite being banana), and are also happy to make insects and small animals part of their diet. With similar eating habits and a nocturnal nature, among a few other unique adaptations, it's not surprising t...o learn they are closely related to our very own North American raccoon! #conservationambassadors #zootoyou #myprecious

Welcome to the Zoo to You family baby Khaleesi! We’re so excited to have another Opossum to help teach about America’s only marsupial! This young Opie was separated from her mother at just a few weeks old, and was brought to us in dire straits. Opossums rely heavily on their mother for the first few months of life, and only about 1 in 10 survive in the wild. After a tremendous battle for life we’re extremely happy to report that little Kali is doing very well and we are prepa...ring her for a life of love and educational outreach. #conservationambassadors #zootoyou #opossum #opossumbabies

We are thrilled that our friend and remarkable taxidermist Allis Markham was able to pay us a recent visit! She and her friends got a tour to meet a few Ambassadors such as Rooby the Kangaroo, and (our newest rescue) this sweet baby Opossum! Thanks to those like Allis, who recreate wildlife at Natural History Museums and for educational programs, people are able to connect to the natural world in a truly unique way. Much like how we aim to encourage appreciation through perso...nal encounters, whether at a school or during a private interaction here at Conservation Ambassadors, the ability to experience wildlife by touch or up close visuals never fails to impact people to their core. We are grateful to Allis and her friends for allowing us to see our animal ambassadors in a whole new light, we can't wait to have you all back! #ConservationAmbassadors #ZooToYou #YouToZoo #Taxidermy
