While most are reporting on an assumed mass exodus from San Francisco, our data from more than 1,500 Bay Area moves this April through September doesn’t necessarily back up that narrative. ZippGo data shows that those moving from San Francisco since the pandemic began (April 1 to September 30, 2020) moved to another location in San Francisco at nearly the same rate as in 2019. 71% stayed in SF in 2020, while 72% stayed in SF in 2019. As with other data out there, ours only pa...ints a partial picture. For example, ZippGo reusable moving boxes are only used in moves within the Bay Area. So we’re not capturing folks leaving the area altogether. However, the supposed exodus to more space and/or greener pastures in the North Bay, East Bay or Peninsula/South Bay doesn’t seem to be a major phenomenon, according to what we’re seeing.
